Ferrari’s hopes of securing their first Formula 1 championship in 17 years have received a significant boost with the signing of Lewis Hamilton, as the Italian team aims to clinch both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles in the upcoming season. Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger, who raced for Ferrari for six seasons, has strongly backed the Maranello-based squad to achieve success, signaling a bright future for the team under their new leadership.
After narrowly missing out on the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, Ferrari is once again positioned as a potential frontrunner for the 2025 season. McLaren triumphed in the final round in Abu Dhabi last year, leaving Ferrari with only a near miss. However, with regulations largely unchanged for this year, the competition at the top of the grid is expected to remain tight, with Ferrari continuing to be a key contender.
Berger, who has had firsthand experience working with Ferrari, is confident that the team will take home at least one title by the end of this season. “I would put my money on Ferrari this season,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. While uncertain whether Hamilton or Charles Leclerc will claim the drivers’ title, he believes Ferrari will secure a championship. “Ferrari was almost always fast last year, with a few slip-ups,” he remarked, highlighting the team’s potential.
At the helm of Ferrari is team principal Frederic Vasseur, who is entering his third season with the team. Vasseur succeeded Mattia Binotto in 2023 and has already begun making his mark. Berger has praised the Frenchman for his ability to bring stability to the team, noting that the improvements are becoming increasingly evident. “Vasseur makes a good impression. He is calm, thoughtful, always on point, and he delivers,” said Berger. His work with the team has received high praise, with many believing that his influence is starting to yield results.
Ferrari’s strong engine and chassis are also contributing factors to the team’s optimism for this season. With top-tier drivers like Hamilton and Leclerc, the team is well-equipped to challenge for both titles. “It was a good decision by Ferrari to sign him (Vasseur),” Berger continued, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the hire. “Now I have the feeling that it’s starting to work.”
The addition of Hamilton to the Ferrari lineup further strengthens their bid for a championship. As the legendary driver partners with Leclerc, both are expected to bring out the best in each other and the car. With an experienced team principal, a potent combination of drivers, and a fast car, Ferrari is in a strong position to break their 17-year title drought.
