Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari has been met with a surprising twist. The seven-time world champion, who replaced Carlos Sainz at the iconic Italian team, has been dealt a blow as Sainz has received a resounding vote of confidence from fans.

Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, where he spent 12 successful seasons, marked the end of an era. During his time with the Silver Arrows, Hamilton won 84 grands prix and six world championship titles. However, his decision to join Ferrari has been met with criticism, particularly given Sainz’s impressive performance in the 2024 season.

In a recent poll conducted by GPFans, fans were asked to vote for their unsung heroes of the 2024 season. The results were telling, with Sainz emerging as the clear winner, securing a whopping 59% of the vote. This outcome is a testament to Sainz’s exceptional performance last season, which saw him claim two race wins and finish ahead of Hamilton in the drivers’ championship standings.

Sainz’s achievements in the 2024 season were all the more impressive given the challenges he faced. The Spanish driver won the Australian Grand Prix in March, just two weeks after undergoing surgery on his appendix. He then went on to deliver a string of consistent results, propelling Ferrari into contention for the constructors’ championship.

The poll results have sparked further debate about Ferrari’s decision to replace Sainz with Hamilton. While Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, Sainz’s performance last season suggests that he was unfairly overlooked.

In second place in the poll was Oscar Piastri, who secured 21% of the vote. The young Australian driver had a breakout season with McLaren, helping the team to secure their first constructors’ championship title since 1998. Piastri’s impressive performances, which included his first two grands prix victories, have marked him out as a rising star in the F1 paddock.

The Williams mechanics also received a special mention in the poll, securing 11% of the vote. Their heroic efforts in repairing the team’s cars following a series of massive crashes involving Logan Sargeant, Franco Colapinto, and Alex Albon were widely praised by fans and pundits alike.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Hamilton and his new teammates at Ferrari. However, the poll results suggest that Sainz’s departure from the team may be felt more deeply than initially anticipated.
