The confirmation by INEOS and Intermarché-Wanty brings to seven the number of WorldTour teams, the top echelon of world cycling, already confirmed for the 51st Volta ao Algarve.
The British INEOS and the Belgian Intermarché-Wanty, two of the ‘habitués’ of the Volta ao Algarve by bicycle, will be present at the 51st edition of the race, which will take place between the 19th and 23rd of February 2025, the organization confirmed today.
One of the great dominators in the last decade in the ‘Algarvia’, INEOS will once again be in the only Portuguese stage race on the UCI ProSeries circuit, seeking to add a sixth triumph overall, after those achieved by Geraint Thomas (2015 and 2016), Richie Porte ( 2012), Michal Kwiatkowski (2018) and Daniel Martínez (2023).
The British team has completed 12 stages in the Volta ao Algarve, a race in which they will participate for the 14th time, the most recent triumph being that of Thomas Pidcock, in 2023, at the top of Malhão, a place where they also beat Kwiatkowski (2018), Porte (2012 and 2015), Sergio Henao (2013) and Stephen Cummings (2011).
It remains to be seen whether Geraint Thomas, who last year was awarded the Prestige Award by the organization, will be present in the ‘Algarvia’, in what will be the last season of the Tour2018 champion and runner-up of the Giro2023 and Tour2019 in the international peloton.
Intermarché-Wanty, which has Eritrean Biniam Girmay as its main ‘star’, will be in the Volta ao Algarve for the 11th time, after having debuted in the race when it was still a ProTeam.
Last year, the Belgian team achieved its first triumph through Gerben Thijssen, who also prevailed in the points classification.
The confirmation from INEOS and Intermarché-Wanty brings to seven the number of WorldTour formations, the first echelon of world cycling, already assured in the 51st Tour of the Algarve, where ProTeams Caja Rural and Lotto will also be present.
