‘It’s sad’: Jacky Ickx Reveals Real Reason Ferrari Signed Lewis Hamilton at Carlos Sainz’s Expense
Formula 1 legend Jacky Ickx has weighed in on Ferrari’s decision to sign Lewis Hamilton, suggesting that the move was driven more by marketing and commercial factors than pure racing performance.
Hamilton’s high-profile switch from Mercedes to Ferrari in 2025 means Carlos Sainz will lose his seat, despite the Spaniard delivering strong performances. Speaking to Belgian media, Ickx, a former Ferrari driver, expressed his disappointment.
“It’s sad for Sainz. He has proven his worth, but the decision wasn’t purely sporting. Ferrari sees Hamilton as an icon, someone who can bring global attention,” Ickx stated.
The Belgian racing legend acknowledged Hamilton’s immense talent but hinted that Ferrari’s motivation was as much about branding as it was about results. “Lewis is fantastic, but at 40, how many competitive years does he have left? Ferrari needed a star name, and that played a role,” he added.
Sainz’s future remains uncertain, with several teams reportedly interested in signing him for 2025.
