2025 Austrian Grand Prix: Starting Grid, Race Time, and Broadcast Details
The 2025 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix takes place today, Sunday, June 29, with McLaren’s Lando Norris set to lead the field from pole position. The young British driver dominated qualifying at the Red Bull Ring, delivering a sensational lap in Q3 that came in under 64 seconds—an astonishing feat given the circuit’s short layout and typically tight margins. Norris didn’t participate in Friday’s FP1 session, giving McLaren’s reserve driver Alex Dunne a chance in the car. However, from FP2 onward, Norris proved unstoppable, topping every session and clearly asserting himself as the man to beat.
Lining up beside him on the front row is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Although Leclerc couldn’t match Norris’s outright pace, he managed to secure second, maintaining his place ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Piastri, who showed promise all weekend, was slightly hindered by late-session issues in Q3 that possibly cost him a better shot at the front row.
Starting fourth is Lewis Hamilton, who put in a composed performance for Ferrari. He’s followed by George Russell in the Mercedes, and an impressive Liam Lawson, who qualified sixth for the Racing Bulls team—outqualifying Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the process.
Verstappen, usually dominant at his team’s home track, could only manage seventh after failing to improve his initial time in Q3. Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto secured eighth for Sauber, making his first Q3 appearance and showing excellent consistency through all qualifying rounds.
Rounding out the top ten are Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly. Just outside the top ten sit veteran drivers Fernando Alonso in 11th for Aston Martin and Alex Albon in 12th for Williams. Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Williams’ Franco Colapinto occupy the seventh row, followed by Haas driver Oliver Bearman and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll.
Esteban Ocon, driving for Haas, starts 17th, just ahead of Red Bull’s struggling Yuki Tsunoda, who suffered another Q1 elimination. Carlos Sainz, surprisingly down in 19th for Williams, was likely impacted by a strategic misstep or technical issues during qualifying. Nico Hulkenberg completes the grid in 20th, putting both Sauber drivers at polar ends of the starting order.
