FIA Issues Official Statement on Dakar Rally Disqualification of Carlos Sainz Sr. and Sébastien Loeb
The FIA has clarified the disqualification of two prominent competitors, Carlos Sainz Sr. and Sébastien Loeb, from the 2025 Dakar Rally, emphasizing the importance of safety regulations. Both drivers were barred from continuing after sustaining roll cage damage during separate incidents in the early stages of the rally.
Carlos Sainz Sr., a celebrated figure in motorsport, entered the 2025 Dakar Rally following a remarkable victory in 2024, where he claimed his fourth Dakar title. At 62 years old, Sainz has built a storied career that includes two World Rally Championship titles and historic achievements such as becoming the oldest Dakar Rally winner in 2023. Ahead of the rally, he also made headlines for a symbolic farewell drive in a Ferrari Formula 1 car before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton.
Despite high expectations, Sainz’s 2025 campaign came to an abrupt end after a serious accident in stage two. His Ford Raptor rolled over, sustaining significant damage, particularly to the roll cage—a critical safety component. If the roll cage is found to be damaged, the vehicle cannot continue,” Rousel stated.

“To restore the car to a homologated standard, the roll cage must be replaced with an identical one. This is not feasible during the rally, especially in the middle of a desert,” Rousel explained. Any makeshift repairs, such as welding or reinforcing damaged sections, would violate safety regulations and potentially endanger the driver.
