Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, has embarked on a new chapter in his illustrious career by joining Scuderia Ferrari for the 2025 season. This significant move not only marks a departure from his long-standing association with British constructors but also immerses him in the rich culture and traditions of Italy. In a candid interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Hamilton opened up about the challenges and rewards of adapting to his new environment, particularly focusing on his efforts to learn the Italian language.

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari represents a monumental shift after spending his entire motorsport career with British teams, notably McLaren and Mercedes. His decision to relocate to Maranello, the home of Ferrari’s headquarters, underscores his commitment to fully integrate into the team’s fabric. Central to this integration is his determination to master the Italian language, a task he acknowledges as formidable. “My dream has always been to learn another language, but being English, it is often more difficult for us to do so because we are not obliged,” Hamilton admitted. “However, I want to let people know that I am interested, that I am really willing to do anything to integrate here. It’s difficult, but I like being in the factory in Maranello because I can practice every day.”

The significance of learning Italian extends beyond personal growth; it is a vital component of Hamilton’s strategy to embed himself within the team and its culture. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized this aspect, stating, “He is learning to speak Italian and understand how to integrate into our culture. I told him it is fundamental for him to be able to do this as well. In Ferrari, he will find a different environment than before.”

Hamilton’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In his early interactions with the team and fans, he has showcased his burgeoning language skills, much to the delight of the Tifosi—the passionate Ferrari supporters. During a recent address, Hamilton expressed his gratitude in Italian: “Hello everyone. Thank you for your warm welcome. I am happy to start this new adventure with you at Ferrari. It has always been my … .”

This gesture resonated deeply with fans and team members alike. Team principal Fred Vasseur, who has a longstanding relationship with Hamilton dating back to his early racing days, was visibly pleased, observing Hamilton’s speech with a broad smile. The mutual respect and understanding between Hamilton and Vasseur are expected to foster a harmonious and productive working environment.

Beyond the linguistic challenges, Hamilton is immersing himself in Italian culture. He has been spotted dining at Ristorante Montana, a favorite haunt of Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, accompanied by his family and Piero Ferrari, the son of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari.  Such experiences are not only enriching on a personal level but also serve to strengthen his bond with the team and its heritage.

On the track, Hamilton’s debut in the SF-25 car at the Fiorano Circuit was met with unprecedented enthusiasm. Thousands of fans gathered, with some going to great lengths to catch a glimpse of the historic moment. One particularly devoted fan even climbed a 25-foot tree and used an electric saw to remove branches obstructing the view, much to the amusement and cheers of fellow spectators.

Reflecting on his first drive, Hamilton conveyed a sense of rejuvenation and excitement: “I’m really conscious of the fact that there are only a handful of special first times in life—the first kiss, the first date, the first time of school, the first time in the job. I honestly thought I’d had all my firsts and nothing would be new again. Given I’ve raced for so long, even I’m surprised at just … —it felt so new.”

Hamilton’s commitment to excellence is evident in his approach to this new venture. He has expressed a desire to elevate every aspect of his performance, from physical fitness to time management and technical collaboration with engineers. This holistic dedication aims to harness the full potential of Ferrari’s resources and expertise. “I’ve worked with two World Championship-winning teams before,” Hamilton noted. “I know what a winning team looks … . The passion here is like nothing you’ve ever seen …  absolutely every ingredient they need to win …  World Championship. It’s just about putting all the pieces together.”

As the season progresses, Hamilton’s integration into Ferrari will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike. His efforts to embrace the language and culture demonstrate a profound respect for the team’s legacy and an earnest desire to contribute meaningfully to its future successes. This journey, while challenging, holds the promise of adding a remarkable new chapter to both Hamilton’s career and Ferrari’s storied history.
