Sergio Perez’s Future in Formula 1 Revealed Following Departure from Red Bull

The 2024 Formula 1 season proved to be a challenging one for Sergio Perez, who struggled to maintain his early-season form. Despite starting the year with four podiums in five races, Perez’s performances took a significant downturn, ultimately finishing the season in eighth place in the drivers’ standings, a whopping 285 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen.

Perez’s struggles on the track also had a significant impact on Red Bull’s constructors’ championship hopes. The team, which had been the reigning champions, was usurped by both McLaren and Ferrari, ultimately finishing the season in third place.

In light of Perez’s disappointing season, it came as little surprise when Red Bull announced that he would be leaving the team ahead of the 2025 season. The team acted swiftly in announcing his replacement, with Liam Lawson set to take over the seat.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has since paid tribute to Perez’s tenure at the team, acknowledging the significant contribution he made to the team’s success in 2021. Horner also revealed that Perez would be taking on a new role within the team, albeit one that would see him step back from driving duties.

“Checo has been a fantastic member of this team, and it’s been a tough year for him,” Horner said in an interview with Sky Sports. “He’s a great person, and he’s played a key role in our success in the past. We sat down and discussed his future last week, and he’s decided to take a bit of time out and take a sabbatical from Formula 1.”

Horner revealed that Perez would still be involved with the team, albeit in a non-driving capacity. “He’ll still be involved with the brand and the team, but he’s stepping back from driving duties moving forward,” Horner said. “It was sad to see him leave the team, but it’s time for him to spend with his young family and reflect on what he wants to do for the future.”

Perez’s departure from Red Bull marks the end of an era for the team, but it also presents an exciting opportunity for the Mexican driver to explore new challenges and pursue new opportunities. As he embarks on this new chapter in his career, Perez can take pride in the significant contribution he made to Red Bull’s success during his time with the team.
