One of Formula 1’s most experienced racers has opened up how long he believes he will still be able to compete at the top level
One of Formula 1’s most seasoned competitors, Nico Hulkenberg, has shared his thoughts on the future of his racing career, stating he has no immediate plans to retire. The Sauber driver, who will turn 38 later this season, insists he still has the drive and ability to perform at the highest level.
Hulkenberg is already confirmed to be part of Audi’s driver lineup when the German manufacturer officially enters Formula 1 in 2026, following its successful acquisition of the Sauber team. Speaking to the German Press Agency, as reported by Sky Sports F1 Germany, Hulkenberg confidently stated: “I can definitely race until I’m 40. So I don’t see any issues in the next few years. What happens after that is hard to predict
With over a decade of experience since making his debut in 2010, Hulkenberg continues to find motivation from fellow veterans like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, who are still competing at top teams Aston Martin and Ferrari well into their late 30s and beyond.
Points on His Mind Ahead of Bahrain
Heading into this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Hulkenberg’s focus is on returning to the points after a couple of tough races. Sauber currently sits ninth in the Constructors’ Championship, though they’ve already outscored their total from last season.
The German made a strong start to 2025 by securing a seventh-place finish in Australia, collecting all six of the team’s current points in difficult wet conditions. However, he’s struggled to maintain that form, finishing outside the top ten in both subsequent races.
His rookie teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto the reigning Formula 2 champions is also still adjusting to life in F1 after making his debut this year. While the Brazilian continues to gain experience, Sauber will be hoping both drivers can capitalize on any opportunity for points in Bahrain.
