Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, has joined Ferrari on a multi-year deal for the 2025 season, but his love for Italian cuisine may have him concerned about fitting into his new car. The 40-year-old Brit confirmed his move to Ferrari in February 2024, where he replaces Carlos Sainz Jr. to partner Charles Leclerc. Hamilton’s contract is reported to be worth £50 million per year, and he officially began his tenure with Ferrari on January 1, 2025.
Since the move, Hamilton has spent considerable time at Ferrari’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy. Known for his passion for Italian food, Hamilton has relished being in the country once again, and in recent weeks, he has indulged in his favorite dishes—especially pizza.
In a light-hearted comment, Hamilton jokingly expressed concerns about fitting into his new Ferrari, attributing his worries to his indulgence in the delicious Italian pizzas. “Oh God. I’ve eaten so many pizzas in the last few weeks,” he said. “But funnily enough, I’ve lost weight.” Despite the temptation of the local cuisine, including consuming three pizzas in just one week, Hamilton humorously remarked that he wasn’t gaining weight.
While he relishes Italian food, one of his all-time favorites remains penne arrabbiata, a traditional pasta dish with a spicy tomato sauce. Hamilton’s appreciation for Italy and its cuisine dates back to his early years in motorsport, particularly during his early years in the sport when he raced in Italy as a teenager. In fact, Hamilton fondly recalled memories from his youth in the country, including his time racing in the Open Italian Championship in 2000 and 2001. Back then, he shared moments with his future Mercedes teammate, Nico Rosberg, who was his partner in the championship.
“I still remember going into town with Nico every evening to buy pizza and ice cream. We ate so much pizza,” Hamilton shared, reminiscing about those carefree days. He also recalled the generosity of his first mechanic, Luca del Fante, and the amazing lasagna his family would prepare. “I have never forgotten that lasagna to this day,” Hamilton added.
Now officially with Ferrari, Hamilton has been testing the team’s new car as he prepares for the 2025 season. He has been working hard, testing and familiarizing himself with the car ahead of the pre-season testing in Bahrain. Despite his jokes about his diet, it’s clear Hamilton is fully committed to his new role and the challenges that lie ahead as he joins one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams.
