Lando Norris has been named Autosport’s British Competition Driver of the Year for 2025 after an exceptional 2024 season, during which he led McLaren’s charge to the top of the Formula 1 constructors’ standings. Norris had a remarkable year, securing his first-ever F1 victory at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. He started the race in sixth place, but a well-timed pit stop during a safety car period allowed him to take the lead and win. He would go on to add three more victories throughout the season, including dominating performances in Zandvoort, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi.

The Singapore Grand Prix, in particular, was a standout moment for Norris, as he secured pole position and finished almost 21 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, who finished second. This victory was one of the most impressive of the season, coming at one of the most challenging races on the F1 calendar. Norris closed out the year with a triumph in Abu Dhabi, where he helped McLaren secure its first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years.

In total, Norris secured 13 podium finishes, eight pole positions, and six fastest laps during the season, ending the year second in the F1 Drivers’ Championship and giving Verstappen a serious challenge for the title. In his acceptance speech for the award, Norris expressed his pride and gratitude, stating that it was an honor to win the title for the third time, following victories in 2020 and 2024. He thanked his fans and promised that 2025 would be an even better year.

Throughout 2024, Norris also gained invaluable experience in his battles with Verstappen, with the two making contact at races in Austria, Austin, and Mexico. Reflecting on the season, Norris acknowledged the growth he had experienced, stating that the challenges had helped him develop the mentality needed to be a future champion. He credited McLaren for putting pressure on Red Bull, emphasizing that they were the only team capable of doing so throughout the season.

As Norris looks ahead to 2025, he remains determined to continue his ascent in F1. With McLaren’s progress and his own improved performances, Norris is optimistic about his chances of dethroning Verstappen and becoming Formula 1’s next champion. His success in 2024 has established him as one of the most promising talents on the grid, and he’s ready for another intense battle in the coming season.
