Piero Ferrari, the son of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari, has expressed confidence in Lewis Hamilton’s ability as he prepares for his first season with the Scuderia. Despite a challenging 2024 season, Hamilton remains a strong contender, and Ferrari is optimistic about his transition into the team. The British driver, who had a mixed year with Mercedes in 2024, is entering a new chapter in his career, having endured what some believe was his toughest season to date.

Hamilton’s 2024 campaign saw both high points and frustrations. He ended a 945-day winless streak by claiming victory at the British Grand Prix, a historic achievement where he became the first F1 driver to win at the same circuit nine times. He followed up with another win in Belgium, though this one came under less than ideal circumstances, as he was promoted to first place after his teammate, George Russell, was disqualified following a post-race inspection. However, despite these two wins, the overall season was marked by struggles, especially in qualifying. Hamilton was outperformed by Russell in qualifying sessions, with the scoreline reading 19-5 in Russell’s favor. The veteran driver often had to rely on his race pace to recover positions on Sundays, leading some pundits to question whether Hamilton was past his prime. However, Piero Ferrari dismissed these concerns.

Piero, who is not worried about Hamilton’s performance going forward, noted that the seven-time world champion remains fit, both physically and mentally. He emphasized that Hamilton has accepted the challenge of joining Ferrari with great enthusiasm and confidence in his abilities, regardless of his age. “It doesn’t seem to me that age is a problem,” Piero stated in an interview with Autosprint. He believes that Hamilton’s commitment and excitement about the new chapter with Ferrari will keep him competitive in the coming seasons.

Hamilton has already begun the process of adapting to his new team. In January, he spent his first week as a Ferrari driver, visiting the team’s headquarters in Maranello, meeting with his new engineers, and getting acquainted with his teammates. During his visit, he was also joined by his family, including his father Anthony Hamilton, mother Carmen, and stepmother Linda. The moment was a significant one, as Hamilton also took part in a test session at Ferrari’s Fiorano track. The occasion was made even more special by the presence of thousands of Ferrari fans, the Tifosi, who gathered at the track to cheer on their new recruit. Hamilton, in turn, acknowledged the warm reception by waving to the fans after his test session.

Piero Ferrari shared that the overwhelming support from the fans took Hamilton’s father by surprise. He recounted a conversation with Anthony Hamilton, describing him as a kind person who was taken aback by the warmth shown by Ferrari supporters. The sight of thousands of fans gathered to support Hamilton and the enthusiastic reception he received was something that surprised not only Lewis but also his family, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting new era for the British driver with Ferrari.

Piero’s positive outlook on Hamilton’s future with the team reflects the confidence that Ferrari has in the veteran driver’s ability to adapt and thrive. With the backing of his family, the support of passionate Ferrari fans, and his own determination, Hamilton is set to embrace his new challenge with renewed vigor as he heads into the 2025 season.
