Russell Explodes: Verstappen Camp Accused of Mercedes Rumour Power Play
Fresh controversy has erupted in the Formula 1 paddock after George Russell accused the Verstappen camp of potentially orchestrating a calculated political maneuver involving Mercedes.
The dramatic claims appear in the latest season of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which revisits the chaotic and fiercely contested 2025 campaign. That season saw three drivers locked in a tense battle for the world championship, while behind the scenes, speculation and power struggles intensified across the grid.
At the heart of the drama was reigning champion Max Verstappen. Despite being under contract with Red Bull Racing, the Dutchman was repeatedly linked with a sensational move to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team for 2026. The rumours gained credibility when Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff openly expressed admiration for Verstappen and refused to rule out future discussions.
The timing of the speculation was significant. Red Bull’s form fluctuated throughout 2025, with the car proving unpredictable at key moments. While Verstappen remained in the title fight, the team’s inconsistency fueled whispers that he could consider a fresh start — particularly with sweeping regulation changes arriving in 2026.
Yet amid the noise surrounding Verstappen’s future, Russell was quietly delivering one of the strongest seasons of his career. The British driver consistently maximized Mercedes’ performance and emerged as the only driver outside the three main championship protagonists to win a race in 2025, claiming victories in Canada and Singapore.
Despite those performances, Russell found himself without a contract extension for 2026 during much of the season. The delay raised eyebrows and led to suggestions that Mercedes may have been holding off while waiting to see whether Verstappen would become available.

In a revealing clip from Drive to Survive, Russell suggested that the Verstappen camp holds considerable influence within Red Bull and may have deliberately allowed — or even encouraged — the Mercedes rumours to swirl.
“The Verstappens clearly have a lot of power in that team,” Russell said. “They like to manipulate situations quite a lot.”
He went further, implying that the speculation may have been designed to increase internal pressure at Red Bull — particularly regarding long-time team principal Christian Horner.
“For whatever reason, they don’t like Horner and they are trying to get Horner out,” Russell added. “I wonder if all of this is a bit of a play and a stir, trying to put pressure on Red Bull — that he’ll only continue there if Christian is gone.”
At the time, Horner had been at the helm of Red Bull for 20 years, overseeing multiple championship-winning eras. His leadership shaped the team into one of Formula 1’s dominant forces. However, in a shocking mid-season development, Red Bull parted ways with Horner last July, ending one of the most successful tenures in the sport’s history.
He was replaced by Laurent Mekies, marking a significant shift in the team’s structure. Following the leadership change, Red Bull’s performance rebounded in the second half of the year, and Verstappen mounted a late charge that nearly secured him a fifth world title.
Whether Russell’s suggestion of a calculated conspiracy holds weight remains unproven. There is no public evidence confirming that Verstappen or his management actively fueled the Mercedes rumours to influence Red Bull’s internal politics. Still, the alignment of events — the persistent speculation, Horner’s exit, and Red Bull’s reset — has inevitably fueled debate.
Meanwhile, Mercedes enters the 2026 era with renewed confidence. The team is widely regarded as one of the outfits best positioned to master the incoming regulation changes. If the Silver Arrows emerge as frontrunners, speculation surrounding Verstappen’s long-term future could easily resurface.
