In an interview with BBC Sounds, recorded after the 2025 season opener but before the Chinese Grand Prix, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel expressed his support for Lewis Hamilton as the Briton aims for the 2025 Formula 1 drivers’ championship with Ferrari. Vettel, who spent six seasons with Ferrari from 2015 to 2020, is well-acquainted with the pressures and challenges of driving for the Scuderia, and he’s now cheering on Hamilton as he takes on the challenge of securing a title with the Italian team.

Vettel joined Ferrari with the hopes of continuing the legacy of his idol and close friend, Michael Schumacher. After a successful run with Red Bull, Vettel joined the Maranello team with the aim of winning championships. His time at Ferrari showed potential, especially in 2017 and 2018 when he mounted serious challenges to Hamilton’s Mercedes dominance. However, despite his efforts, Hamilton emerged victorious after two stellar seasons. In a 2021 press conference at Imola, Hamilton reflected on their rivalry, stating that their battles were among his favorites, highlighting the mutual respect between the two drivers.

Vettel, when asked about the unique pressures of racing with Ferrari compared to other teams, offered a candid response. He acknowledged the challenges of being at Ferrari, noting that his own attempt to win there hadn’t worked out due to the intense competition from Hamilton. However, he expressed optimism for Hamilton’s prospects in the 2025 season, saying, “My fingers are crossed” for him. Vettel praised Hamilton as one of the most influential drivers on the grid, emphasizing his on-track abilities, which are well-documented in the record books. He also noted Hamilton’s positive influence on the sport, showing respect for his role both on and off the track.

Vettel also pointed out that while he hopes for Hamilton to succeed, he is equally supportive of Charles Leclerc, who is also part of the Ferrari lineup. Having raced against Leclerc, Vettel recognizes his talent and the strong potential of the Ferrari team. He acknowledged that for any driver to be in a position to fight for the championship in the final races, a lot of elements must align, and it takes a complete team effort to reach that stage. While the 2025 season could be tight and competitive, Vettel refrained from ruling out any of the top drivers, suggesting that the season could be unpredictable.

Looking ahead, the 2026 regulations will bring significant changes to the cars, providing a fresh slate for all teams as they develop their new machines. Vettel believes that these changes could offer Hamilton a fair shot at the championship again, making 2025 a crucial but potentially exciting season as teams gear up for the future.
