Formula 1 legend Sebastian Vettel has opened up about his illustrious career, revealing the one regret that still lingers in his mind. The four-time world champion, who retired from F1 in 2022, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the sport’s impact on the environment and its lack of diversity.
In an interview with the BBC, Vettel admitted that he was initially oblivious to the wider issues plaguing the sport, focusing solely on his racing career. “I was solely focused on racing, and it was the only thing that was occupying my day, really,” the 37-year-old said.
Vettel’s career spanned over 15 years, with stints at Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston Martin. He achieved unparalleled success with Red Bull, securing four consecutive drivers’ title victories from 2010 to 2013.
However, it was during his latter years in the sport that Vettel began to use his platform to raise awareness about pressing issues. He became an outspoken advocate for sustainability and diversity, often using his voice to inspire change.
One notable instance was at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, where Vettel was reprimanded for refusing to remove a ‘same love’ T-shirt, sparking a heated debate with fellow champion Lewis Hamilton.
Reflecting on his career, Vettel expressed his regret for not speaking out sooner. “Towards the last couple of years, I think it’s probably one of the things, if maybe the only thing that I would say I regret is not to speak out earlier in my career,” he said.
Vettel acknowledged the immense power and influence that professional athletes wield, and how they can use their platform to inspire positive change. “Seeing the potential power in terms of reach and audience that you might have as a professional athlete to inspire people, and since then, really trying to spread messages that are important to me,” he added.
As Vettel looks back on his remarkable career, it’s clear that his regret stems from not using his voice to make a difference sooner. Nevertheless, his latter years in the sport have shown that it’s never too late to make an impact and inspire change.
