The starting lineup for the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix has been revised after Aston Martin confirmed that hometown favourite Fernando Alonso will begin Sunday’s race from the pit lane.
The decision follows a series of power unit component changes made to Alonso’s AMR26 after qualifying. Aston Martin introduced a fourth MGU-K, energy store, and control electronics unit to the car, exceeding the season-long allocation of three for each component and automatically triggering a pit lane start.
For Alonso, the penalty carries little additional consequence after a difficult qualifying session saw him finish 22nd and last on the timesheets for his home event. The two-time world champion endured a rare setback, as teammate Lance Stroll outqualified him for the first time since the 2024 British Grand Prix. That result brought an impressive streak of 42 consecutive race weekends in which Alonso had remained ahead of his Aston Martin teammate in qualifying.
Given his position at the rear of the grid, Aston Martin elected to take advantage of the situation by fitting fresh power unit elements, providing Alonso with a strategic opportunity to use newer components later in the race and throughout the remainder of the season.
At the front of the field, George Russell retains pole position after delivering a standout qualifying performance for Mercedes. He will be joined on the front row by Ferrari veteran Lewis Hamilton, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli starts third.
The revised grid also sees strong starting positions for McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, as well as reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who lines up fifth for Red Bull.
With overtaking opportunities available around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, fans can expect plenty of action throughout the field, particularly as Alonso attempts to fight his way forward from the pit lane in front of his home supporters.
