The opening day of the Austrian Grand Prix produced plenty of excitement, with standout performances mixed with technical troubles and reliability concerns across both Friday practice sessions. While there were few on-track incidents, several teams faced mechanical setbacks as they continued preparations for qualifying and Sunday’s race.
One of the biggest concerns emerged during the second practice session when Cadillac’s Sergio Perez suffered another technical issue. After experiencing problems in the opening session, Perez was once again forced to stop on track, losing valuable running time and leaving the team with more reliability questions to answer before the weekend progresses.
There was also a frightening moment when Valtteri Bottas’ Formula 1 car caught fire after flames appeared beneath the floor. Marshals responded immediately and quickly extinguished the blaze, with Bottas escaping unharmed. Although the incident was resolved without injury, it highlighted the intense demands placed on the cars at the Red Bull Ring.
At the front of the field, Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable form by topping the timesheets in both practice sessions. The rookie looked confident throughout the day, delivering consistent pace that puts him firmly among the favourites heading into qualifying.
Ferrari introduced engine upgrades in Austria hoping to close the gap to the leading teams, but the improvements failed to produce the desired results. Despite the updated package, the Scuderia remained off the pace and now faces more work to improve its performance before the competitive sessions begin.
Earlier on Friday, Max Verstappen experienced a frustrating start when technical issues caused his Red Bull to stop twice in the pit lane. The car had to be pushed back into the garage on both occasions, limiting his running and preventing the team from gathering as much data as planned.
McLaren also endured problems after reigning world champion Lando Norris was sidelined by a hydraulic issue that kept him in the garage for most of the opening practice session. He only managed to complete a handful of laps in the closing minutes, leaving him with limited preparation.
Despite the setbacks experienced by several teams, Friday’s practice sessions provided plenty of useful information ahead of qualifying. With Antonelli setting the benchmark, Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton remaining competitive, and teams working hard to solve reliability issues, the Austrian Grand Prix is set up for an exciting weekend.
