The starting grid for the sprint race at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix has been finalized following Friday’s qualifying session, with a few penalties and adjustments shaping the order. The short-format race promises plenty of action, especially at the front where a non-Mercedes driver finally breaks the Silver Arrows’ dominance this season.
At the head of the grid is Lando Norris, who delivered an outstanding performance for McLaren to secure pole position. The reigning world champion produced a stunning lap in sprint qualifying, marking the first time in 2026 that a driver outside Mercedes will start from the front row. Alongside him is championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who managed to recover from a challenging session with an excellent final lap to secure P2 for Mercedes.
McLaren’s strong form continues with Oscar Piastri lining up third, reinforcing the team’s pace advantage over their rivals. Ferrari, despite showing promising speed earlier in the session, failed to fully capitalize in SQ3. Charles Leclerc will start from fourth after a mistake on his final run, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton could only manage seventh following a similar error.
There was a slight resurgence for Max Verstappen, who has endured a difficult run of form recently. The Red Bull driver showed improved pace and will start fifth, just ahead of George Russell in sixth. Russell, like the rest of the Mercedes team, struggled to match the pace of McLaren and Ferrari across the earlier qualifying segments.
Further down the grid, Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly secured eighth and tenth respectively, with Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar slotting into ninth. Audi also had a steady session, placing Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg in 11th and 12th.
One of the biggest setbacks came for Alex Albon. Initially qualifying 14th, the Williams driver was demoted to 19th after his fastest SQ1 lap was deleted for exceeding track limits. This penalty significantly reshuffled the lower half of the grid. Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, who failed to set a time in qualifying, has been granted permission to race after demonstrating adequate pace in practice.
