BREAKING: F1 Standings After Bahrain Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton Stuns and Mercedes Star Suffers…read more

The Formula 1 championship picture has taken another dramatic turn following a chaotic Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with Lewis Hamilton producing a stunning recovery drive while Mercedes suffered a major setback.

Max Verstappen claimed his first victory of the 2026 season, controlling the race to take a crucial win for Red Bull. Kimi Antonelli finished second, while Hamilton completed the podium after overcoming a difficult start to the race.

Hamilton began the Grand Prix from second on the grid and appeared to have a strong opportunity to challenge for victory. However, Ferrari’s decision to switch to dry-weather tyres proved costly when the circuit still demanded intermediate tyres.

The seven-time world champion consequently dropped down the order and found himself with plenty of ground to recover. Hamilton responded in spectacular fashion, fighting his way through the field with a series of impressive overtakes and consistent pace.

His recovery ultimately secured third place and a valuable haul of championship points, further strengthening his position in the drivers’ standings.

While Hamilton celebrated a remarkable podium, Mercedes endured mixed fortunes. Antonelli’s second-place finish proved extremely important in the championship battle, with the young Italian extending his advantage over teammate George Russell to 84 points.

Russell had looked set for a strong result after starting the race from third and remaining competitive throughout the opening stages. However, his hopes of standing on the podium disappeared late in the race when he suffered an engine-related problem on lap 50 of 56.

The retirement was particularly painful for Mercedes, as Russell was in position to collect a significant number of points. Instead, he left Malaysia empty-handed and now finds himself under increasing pressure in the championship battle.

Hamilton’s podium also allowed him to make significant progress against his former Mercedes teammate. Russell’s advantage over Hamilton has now been reduced to just 22 points, setting up an increasingly intriguing fight as the season progresses.

Mercedes nevertheless remain firmly at the top of the constructors’ championship. The Silver Arrows head into the next round in Singapore with a commanding 151-point advantage over Ferrari.

Behind them, Red Bull have also made progress. Verstappen’s victory has helped the reigning powerhouse close the gap to McLaren in third place, with Red Bull now just 18 points behind.

With the championship battle becoming increasingly intense, all eyes will now turn to Singapore, where another dramatic chapter in the 2026 F1 season could unfold.
