Mercedes driver George Russell is under increasing pressure ahead of the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, with growing concerns that he could soon face a serious challenge to his status within the team.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, winning the opening race in Australia and briefly emerging as one of the favourites for the drivers’ championship. His performances also helped Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team establish themselves as early leaders in the constructors’ standings during the first year of the sport’s new regulation era.
However, Russell’s momentum has gradually faded as his teenage team-mate Kimi Antonelli continues to make headlines with a remarkable rookie campaign. The 19-year-old Italian, who replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton after Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, was initially viewed by many as a risky choice by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
Despite those doubts, Antonelli has quickly proven he belongs at the top level. Since Russell’s victory in Melbourne, the young Italian has delivered a series of standout performances, breaking multiple records along the way. His win at the Japanese Grand Prix made him the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history, while another triumph in Miami strengthened his growing reputation as one of the sport’s brightest stars.
Antonelli’s recent success in the United States was particularly impressive. He converted yet another pole position into victory, becoming the first driver to turn his first three career poles into wins. That result extended his advantage over Russell to 20 points in the championship standings and intensified discussions about who truly leads Mercedes heading into the middle phase of the season.
With a three-week break before Formula 1 heads to Montreal, Russell now faces mounting scrutiny. Many observers believe the British driver must respond immediately if he wants to maintain his credentials as a genuine title contender and the team’s senior figure.
Speaking on Sky F1’s coverage, presenter Simon Lazenby suggested the Canadian Grand Prix could become a defining moment in Russell’s season. According to Lazenby, another victory for Antonelli would shift the situation from a manageable frustration into a full-blown crisis for Russell. Four consecutive wins for the Italian would further underline that Antonelli has no intention of playing a supporting role at Mercedes during a championship fight.
Fortunately for Russell, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has traditionally suited his driving style, and Mercedes are also expected to introduce upgrades for the Canadian weekend. Those factors may provide him with the perfect opportunity to halt Antonelli’s momentum and reassert himself within the team.
The next round of the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Canadian Grand Prix, will take place from May 22 to May 24 in Montreal.
