BREAKING: Helmut Marko Fires Back at Christian Horner Over Controversial Max Verstappen…read mor
Helmut Marko has responded to controversial comments from former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner regarding Max Verstappen’s arrival at Red Bull, strongly disputing the version of events presented by his former colleague.
Verstappen has gone on to establish himself as one of Formula 1’s most successful drivers, winning four world championships and earning widespread praise for his performances since entering the sport. However, more than a decade after his Red Bull journey began, disagreements have emerged over exactly how the team viewed the young Dutchman when he was first being considered.
Horner, who was dismissed by Red Bull in July 2025 after a lengthy spell as team principal, recently discussed Verstappen’s early career during an interview with a UK publication. His comments raised eyebrows, particularly his claim that Marko was initially against bringing the young driver into the Red Bull family.
According to Horner, Marko allegedly warned him about Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, saying: “The father’s a nightmare … We don’t need this one.”
The comments quickly attracted attention because Marko played a major role in Red Bull’s driver programme and was heavily involved in identifying and developing young talent.
Marko, now 83, was subsequently asked about Horner’s version of events during an interview with Austrian outlet OE24. Rather than accepting Horner’s account, the veteran motorsport adviser appeared to dismiss the claim.
“I’m ignoring it as much as possible. Ralf Schumacher handled it very well,” Marko said.
His response appeared to reference former F1 driver and television analyst Ralf Schumacher, who had already criticized Horner’s comments.
Schumacher recently described Horner’s account as “a complete lie” during an episode of the Backstage Boxengasse podcast. His remarks added another layer to the disagreement surrounding Verstappen’s early Red Bull years.
Despite the differing accounts, there is no doubt about what Verstappen eventually achieved after joining the Red Bull system. The Dutchman quickly demonstrated exceptional speed and maturity before becoming one of the dominant forces of modern Formula 1.
The latest exchange between Horner and Marko therefore provides a fascinating look into the behind-the-scenes history of Verstappen’s career. While the exact conversations that took place more than a decade ago may never be completely settled, the disagreement highlights just how highly contested the story of one of F1’s greatest modern talents remains.
