Jos Verstappen has publicly criticized former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher after Schumacher made fresh claims regarding Max Verstappen’s future and the ongoing rumours linking the Dutch star with a move to Mercedes.
Speculation about Verstappen potentially leaving Red Bull has intensified over the past year despite the reigning four-time world champion being under contract with the team until the end of 2028. The rumours gained further momentum after Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, confirmed that an exit clause exists in the driver’s contract, potentially allowing him to leave Red Bull before the agreement expires.
According to reports, the clause could become active during the summer break at the end of July. Its activation is believed to depend on Verstappen’s position in the Drivers’ Championship standings. With Red Bull struggling to match the pace of its rivals this season, Verstappen is reportedly outside the top positions in the championship battle. The Dutch driver currently finds himself significantly behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, increasing speculation that he may consider alternative options for the future.
Mercedes has consistently been mentioned as the most likely destination should Verstappen decide to leave Red Bull. Team principal Toto Wolff has long admired Verstappen, and rumours linking the two parties have persisted throughout the season.
Ralf Schumacher recently offered his own theory regarding the situation. The former Formula 1 driver suggested that Mercedes may not actually be pushing aggressively to sign Verstappen because of concerns about team harmony. Schumacher argued that pairing Verstappen with highly-rated rookie Kimi Antonelli could create internal tensions similar to the intense rivalry that developed between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg during their years as Mercedes teammates.
Schumacher claimed that bringing Verstappen into the team would place two elite drivers in direct competition, potentially creating management challenges for Wolff. He suggested that Mercedes would be cautious about repeating the difficulties experienced during the Hamilton-Rosberg era, when competition between teammates often created friction within the team.
However, Jos Verstappen strongly rejected Schumacher’s comments. Responding on social media, the former Formula 1 driver dismissed the claims outright, stating: “Ralf, again you bring wrong information.”
His response highlights the frustration within the Verstappen camp regarding ongoing speculation and assumptions surrounding Max’s future. While rumours continue to dominate headlines, neither Verstappen nor his representatives have publicly indicated that a departure from Red Bull is imminent.
Recent reports suggest that Verstappen and manager Raymond Vermeulen met with senior Red Bull officials before the Spanish Grand Prix to discuss the team’s future direction and competitiveness. Sources indicate that while Verstappen has not informed Red Bull of any intention to leave, he has also stopped short of offering a firm commitment beyond the near future.
Vermeulen recently emphasized that the priority remains achieving success with Red Bull. However, he also acknowledged that Verstappen’s long-term future depends on having a car capable of consistently fighting for victories and championships.
“We want to continue with Red Bull and ideally see Max finish his career there,” Vermeulen explained. “But he should always have the opportunity to compete for wins.”
As uncertainty continues over Red Bull’s performance and Verstappen’s future plans, speculation linking the Dutch champion with Mercedes is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
