Tensions have flared in the Formula 1 paddock after Jos Verstappen strongly dismissed claims that his son, Max Verstappen, is preparing for a sensational move to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
The controversy began when former Dutch pit reporter Jack Plooij revealed on television that he had supposedly heard confirmation of the move directly from Verstappen’s father. Speaking during an appearance on Ziggo Sport’s Race Café, Plooij claimed that Jos had casually told him, “We’re going to Mercedes,” suggesting that a blockbuster transfer could already be in motion.
Despite the bold assertion, Jos Verstappen has categorically denied the story and made it clear that no such conversation ever took place. Responding publicly after the comments gained traction on social media, he did not hold back. In a sharp and somewhat sarcastic rebuttal, Jos suggested that Plooij may have either misheard or completely imagined the exchange. He even went as far as joking that the reporter should consider having his hearing checked—or “have his ears syringed”—to avoid spreading misinformation.

Much of the uncertainty stems from Verstappen’s growing frustration with Formula 1’s latest engine regulations. Since the introduction of the new rules, the Dutch driver has struggled to hide his dissatisfaction, openly criticizing the direction the sport has taken. Following the Japanese Grand Prix in March, Verstappen expressed concern that the changes have made racing feel less natural and less enjoyable.
