Tensions flared inside the Mercedes garage during the sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix as rising star Kimi Antonelli accused team-mate George Russell of forcing him off the track in an aggressive early-race battle.
Mercedes has experienced several high-profile intra-team rivalries over the years, and the latest clash between Russell and Antonelli suggested another fierce contest could be developing within the Silver Arrows camp.
The incident unfolded just a few laps into the 24-lap sprint race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Starting from the front row alongside Russell, Antonelli made a bold attempt to seize the lead heading into the opening corner. The 19-year-old launched an ambitious move and briefly edged ahead before running across the grass as the pair battled wheel-to-wheel.
Shortly afterward, television cameras again showed Antonelli leaving the track while trying to stay alongside his team-mate. The young Italian was clearly unhappy with Russell’s driving and immediately voiced his frustrations over team radio.
Antonelli believed Russell had squeezed him too tightly on the exit of Turn 1 and failed to leave enough racing room. According to the teenager, he had earned the right to space because he was already alongside the Mercedes driver during the corner.
His second trip off the circuit proved costly. The loss of momentum allowed Lando Norris to move ahead, dropping Antonelli from second to third after Mercedes had locked out the front row at the start of the sprint.
Clearly furious, Antonelli demanded that race officials investigate the incident and penalise Russell.
“That was very naughty,” Antonelli said over the radio. “That should be a penalty, I was alongside the mirror!”
The complaints continued for several moments as Antonelli discussed the clash with race engineer Pete Bonnington. The situation eventually became heated enough for Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to intervene directly over the radio.
“Kimi, concentrate on the driving, please, not on the radio moaning,” Wolff told the young driver in an attempt to calm tensions and refocus him on the race ahead.
The exchange immediately drew attention from Formula 1 fans, many of whom saw echoes of previous Mercedes rivalries involving drivers fighting for supremacy within the same team. While Antonelli is only in his rookie season, the teenager has already shown a willingness to challenge Russell aggressively on track and speak openly when frustrated.
Russell, meanwhile, appeared determined not to surrender position despite the pressure from his younger team-mate. The British driver has become Mercedes’ leading figure following the departure of Lewis Hamilton, and he now faces a highly-rated newcomer eager to establish himself quickly.
Although race stewards did not immediately hand Russell a penalty, the confrontation added another layer of drama to an already intense sprint race in Montreal. With Antonelli continuing to impress with his raw speed and confidence, Mercedes may soon have to carefully manage a potentially explosive rivalry between two drivers unwilling to back down.
