Max Verstappen suffered heartbreaking disappointment at the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours after a mechanical failure ended what had looked like a race-winning performance for the Mercedes-AMG-backed Verstappen Racing squad.
The Dutch star and his team had been among the standout performers throughout the famous endurance event, controlling large sections of the race and emerging as strong favourites for victory before disaster struck in the closing stages.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours once again delivered dramatic action, unpredictable weather, and constant twists across the demanding German circuit. Early in the race, the GT3 category quickly became a battle of survival as several top contenders dropped out following multiple incidents during the opening six hours.
Changing weather conditions added even more chaos to the race. Heavy rain swept across the circuit on Saturday evening, forcing teams into difficult strategy calls. Some squads benefitted from perfectly timed decisions, while others lost valuable ground after gambling on the wrong setup and tyre choices. Aston Martin’s Walkenhorst Motorsport team was among those caught out by the sudden downpour, with strategy errors hurting their challenge.
Mercedes-AMG teams appeared to handle the changing conditions better than most rivals, and for long periods the manufacturer looked firmly in control of the event. At one stage, Mercedes-AMG entries occupied both first and second positions, highlighting the strength and consistency of the German marque throughout the race.
Verstappen Racing in particular looked exceptionally strong. The team maintained impressive pace through changing track conditions and appeared well positioned to secure a memorable triumph. Verstappen himself attracted huge attention throughout the weekend, with massive crowds gathering to watch the Formula 1 champion compete in one of the world’s most iconic endurance races.
However, with only around three hours remaining, the race took a devastating turn for the Verstappen-backed entry. A drive shaft failure suddenly brought their challenge to an end, robbing the team of a potential victory after dominating much of the event.
The retirement was a painful blow not only for Verstappen Racing but also for Mercedes-AMG, which had seen both of its leading cars locked in an intense internal battle for victory over much of the race distance.
Despite the disappointment surrounding Verstappen’s exit, Mercedes-AMG still celebrated a landmark success through the Winward Racing Ravenol entry, which secured a major victory for the manufacturer after a decade-long wait at the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
Mercedes-AMG Motorsport boss Christoph Sagemüller praised the achievement while also expressing sympathy for the Verstappen Racing crew following their cruel misfortune.
He described the Nürburgring 24 Hours as one of the most prestigious and important endurance races on the motorsport calendar and admitted the manufacturer had been determined to return to the top step of the podium.
Sagemüller said he was thrilled Mercedes-AMG Team Ravenol managed to secure victory after ten years away from winning the famous event. At the same time, he acknowledged how difficult it was to see Verstappen Racing forced out after such a strong performance.
The Mercedes-AMG chief reflected on how closely matched the two leading Mercedes entries had been for much of the race and explained that the fine margins of endurance racing can quickly turn celebration into heartbreak.
He also thanked everyone involved in the event, including team members, drivers, and fans who contributed to another memorable edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
For Verstappen, the result marked another frustrating near-miss in endurance racing despite showing impressive speed and consistency across the weekend. Although victory slipped away in cruel fashion, the performance once again demonstrated the competitiveness of Verstappen Racing and Mercedes-AMG at one of motorsport’s toughest events.
