Lewis Hamilton produced a masterclass at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, claiming a landmark victory for Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and ending a lengthy wait for a Formula 1 race win.
The seven-time world champion delivered a flawless drive to secure his first full-distance Grand Prix victory in Ferrari colours, crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell. The result marks Hamilton’s first Grand Prix triumph since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix and adds another remarkable chapter to his legendary career.
Russell arrived in Barcelona determined to bounce back after a disappointing Monaco weekend and started the race in a strong position. However, Ferrari’s strategic brilliance ultimately proved decisive. The turning point came on lap 42 when a Virtual Safety Car period was triggered following Fernando Alonso’s retirement at Turn 9.
Ferrari reacted instantly, bringing Hamilton into the pits at exactly the right moment. The reduced speed conditions allowed him to make a low-cost pit stop before rejoining the race in a commanding position. Once the Virtual Safety Car ended, Hamilton unleashed impressive pace on the hard tyre compound and quickly built a gap that Mercedes could not close.
From that point onward, the Briton controlled proceedings with authority, steadily extending his lead and eventually taking the chequered flag around 20 seconds ahead of Russell. The victory also saw Hamilton set a new benchmark at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, surpassing the previous record for the most Formula 1 wins at the venue.
Mercedes still had reasons to celebrate despite missing out on victory. Russell secured second place, finishing ahead of championship-leading team-mate Kimi Antonelli for the first time since the opening race of the season in Australia.
Antonelli looked set for another strong points finish before his race unravelled late on. A battle with Russell left the young Italian carrying damage to his front-right tyre, and his afternoon came to an abrupt end on lap 62 when his engine suddenly failed. His retirement triggered another Virtual Safety Car period and ended a frustrating day for the championship leader.
Ferrari also suffered mixed fortunes. While Hamilton celebrated a historic victory, team-mate Charles Leclerc endured another disappointing outing. The Monegasque driver developed power steering issues in the closing stages and was forced to retire, denying Ferrari the opportunity for a double points finish.
McLaren salvaged valuable championship points thanks to Lando Norris, who recovered from a difficult weekend to secure third place and complete an all-British podium alongside Hamilton and Russell. It marked the first all-British Formula 1 podium since 1968.
Defending world champion Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull, narrowly ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who completed the top five. Red Bull youngster Isack Hadjar continued his impressive season by taking sixth place, while Alpine enjoyed a productive afternoon with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto finishing seventh and eighth respectively.
Further down the order, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the points-paying positions for Racing Bulls.
Hamilton’s victory not only ended a 686-day wait for a Grand Prix win but also delivered Ferrari’s first Formula 1 triumph since Carlos Sainz’s victory at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix.
