George Russell has reflected on the heartbreak of losing victory at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix after the FIA disqualified him from the final results due to a technical infringement. Although the outcome was difficult to accept, the Mercedes driver insisted he had fulfilled his role perfectly throughout the race.
At Spa-Francorchamps, Russell produced one of the standout drives of his career by committing to an ambitious one-stop strategy. While many of his rivals made additional pit stops for fresh tyres, Russell expertly managed tyre wear to stay on track and preserve his track position.
In the closing laps, he came under heavy pressure from teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was charging through the field on much fresher tyres. Despite the pace disadvantage, Russell remained calm and defended brilliantly to cross the finish line in first place.
The victory initially appeared to be Russell’s third Formula 1 win and another sign that Mercedes had returned to the front of the grid after significant improvements during the second half of the season. However, post-race scrutineering found his car to be below the FIA’s minimum weight requirement, resulting in his disqualification and promoting Hamilton to race winner.
Looking back on the incident, Russell explained that he had no regrets about his performance, saying his responsibility was simply to drive the race as well as possible, manage the tyres, and execute the team’s strategy. He felt he had delivered exactly what was expected of him.
Although the official result denied him the victory, Russell’s drive at Spa continues to be regarded as one of the finest performances of his career, highlighting his racecraft, tyre management, and composure under intense pressure, while also demonstrating how the smallest technical detail can change the outcome in Formula 1.
