Mercedes have been handed a penalty by the FIA following an incident involving George Russell during the opening practice session of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
The first free practice session around the famous streets of Monte Carlo saw Ferrari emerge as the early pace-setter. Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets, while teammate Lewis Hamilton secured second place, giving the Italian team an encouraging start to the weekend. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third, ahead of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli in fourth and George Russell in fifth.
While Russell’s performance on track was largely uneventful, the British driver found himself under scrutiny from FIA officials for a pit-lane infringement. Following a review of the session, stewards determined that Russell had exceeded the pit-lane speed limit, resulting in a financial penalty for the Mercedes team.
According to the FIA, Russell breached Article B1.6.3a of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations. The Monaco Grand Prix operates with a strict pit-lane speed limit of 60 km/h, a measure designed to ensure safety in one of the sport’s most confined and challenging venues. During FP1, Russell was recorded travelling at 60.3 km/h while passing through the pit lane.
Although the excess speed was only 0.3 km/h above the permitted limit, FIA regulations leave little room for discretion in such cases. As a result, Mercedes received a €100 fine. The punishment is considered minor and is unlikely to have any impact on the team’s competitive prospects for the remainder of the weekend.
The incident serves as a reminder of Formula 1’s strict enforcement of regulations, even for seemingly insignificant infractions. Pit-lane speed limits are monitored closely throughout every race weekend, and teams are expected to ensure their drivers remain within the prescribed limits at all times.
Despite the fine, Mercedes enjoyed a relatively positive opening session. Antonelli and Russell both finished inside the top five, suggesting the team could be in contention as the weekend progresses. However, Ferrari’s strong pace, combined with Verstappen’s presence near the front, indicates that qualifying and the race could be fiercely contested.
Fans still have plenty of Formula 1 action to look forward to in Monaco. The second practice session of the weekend is scheduled for Friday afternoon, giving teams another opportunity to fine-tune their cars around the iconic street circuit.
The weekend will continue with the final practice session on Saturday before the all-important qualifying session. Qualifying is often regarded as the most crucial part of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend due to the difficulty of overtaking on the narrow streets of the principality.
