Mercedes Formula 1 star Kimi Antonelli has confirmed that he will take a grid penalty at his home Italian Grand Prix in Monza on September 6, with the championship leader accepting that the setback is necessary as Mercedes manages its power unit allocation.
The 19-year-old Italian has enjoyed an impressive 2026 campaign and currently leads the drivers’ championship. However, both Antonelli and Mercedes team-mate George Russell are approaching the limit on the number of power unit components permitted during the season. As a result, penalties have become increasingly difficult for the team to avoid.
Antonelli has now revealed that Mercedes has decided Monza will be the weekend when he takes the unavoidable penalty. The decision is particularly significant because the race is his home event, meaning thousands of passionate Italian supporters will be watching their local star compete.
Despite the disappointment of starting further down the grid at his home circuit, Antonelli believes Monza offers Mercedes the best opportunity to limit the damage and recover during the race.
The high-speed nature of the historic Italian circuit could provide opportunities for overtaking, while Mercedes is expected to have a strong enough car to fight its way through the field. Antonelli therefore appears confident that the penalty will not completely derail his championship campaign.
Speaking about the decision, Antonelli indicated that the team has carefully considered where the penalty would have the least impact and believes Monza represents the most suitable opportunity to take it.
The timing will nevertheless put additional pressure on the young championship leader. Antonelli has emerged as one of the standout performers of the season, and maintaining his advantage at the top of the standings will be crucial as the championship battle intensifies.
Mercedes will now focus on maximising Antonelli’s recovery during the race rather than trying to avoid the penalty altogether. The Italian driver will also have the support of his home crowd as he attempts to fight back from his grid disadvantage.
