The FIA has confirmed its final decision following a post-race investigation involving Max Verstappen and George Russell after the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, ending speculation over whether the podium results would be changed.

Following an exciting race at the Red Bull Ring, attention quickly turned to an incident between the Mercedes and Red Bull drivers during the closing laps. The stewards launched a review, prompting widespread discussion among Formula 1 fans over the possibility of a time penalty that could have affected the final finishing order.

After carefully assessing video footage, telemetry data and statements from both teams, the FIA concluded that neither Verstappen nor Russell had committed an offence deserving of a penalty. The stewards ruled that the battle remained within the limits of fair and competitive racing under the FIA’s sporting regulations.

The investigation centred on an intense wheel-to-wheel duel as Verstappen challenged Russell for the race lead in the final stages. Although the contest was aggressive, officials determined that both drivers raced fairly, with no evidence that either competitor forced the other off the circuit or gained an illegal advantage.

The verdict means the provisional classification now stands as the official race result. George Russell therefore keeps his Austrian Grand Prix victory, while Max Verstappen remains in second place, ensuring both drivers retain the championship points they earned on track.

Mercedes expressed satisfaction with the outcome, applauding Russell for his calm and determined performance under relentless pressure from Verstappen. Red Bull also accepted the stewards’ ruling, recognising the FIA’s decision while praising Verstappen’s strong pace throughout the weekend.

The Austrian Grand Prix delivered another memorable chapter in the 2026 Formula 1 season, featuring bold overtakes, strategic battles and an exciting finish that entertained fans from start to finish.

With the investigation now closed and no penalties issued, the championship standings remain unchanged. Focus now turns to the next round of the season, where the fight for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles is expected to become even more competitive as every point grows increasingly important.
