Hamilton Leads Ferrari Charge as Sprint Pole Battle Narrows at Silverstone
The battle for Sprint pole position at the British Grand Prix intensified as the field was reduced to the final 10 drivers following a fiercely contested Sprint Qualifying session at Silverstone. Pierre Gasly, Gabriel Bortoleto, Nico Hülkenberg, Franco Colapinto, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon were all eliminated before the decisive SQ3 shootout, bringing an end to their hopes of starting the Sprint from the front of the grid.
The 2026 Formula 1 season has introduced a revised Sprint Qualifying format following the arrival of Cadillac, which expanded the championship grid from 20 to 22 cars. As a result, six drivers are now eliminated in both SQ1 and SQ2, compared to five in previous seasons. The adjustment ensures that 10 drivers progress to the final SQ3 session to compete for Sprint pole position.
Although the number of competitors has increased, the duration of each Sprint Qualifying session has remained unchanged. SQ1 continues to last 12 minutes, SQ2 is 10 minutes long, while SQ3 remains an intense eight-minute contest. This differs from traditional Grand Prix qualifying, where the final Q3 session has been extended to 13 minutes under the updated 2026 sporting regulations.
Ferrari emerged as one of the standout teams throughout Friday’s running, displaying impressive pace in both practice and Sprint Qualifying. Lewis Hamilton, in particular, looked increasingly comfortable behind the wheel and continued his strong run of form at Silverstone, raising expectations of a competitive performance in the Sprint race. His pace, combined with Ferrari’s overall speed, has positioned the Italian team as one of the favourites heading into the remainder of the weekend.
