Max Verstappen has reassured fans that he is unharmed after suffering a dramatic high-speed crash during qualifying for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion was pushing hard on his final flying lap in Q3 as he fought for what could have been a surprise pole position. Verstappen had shown impressive pace throughout the session and appeared capable of challenging George Russell, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton for the top spot on the grid.
However, disaster struck at Turn 9 when the rear of his Red Bull suddenly stepped out. The Dutchman lost control at high speed, slid through the gravel trap and slammed into the barriers, bringing an abrupt end to his qualifying session. Fortunately, Verstappen climbed out of the damaged car under his own power and was quickly confirmed to be uninjured. Radio communication from the Red Bull driver indicated he was okay, and he later spoke to the media, admitting he was puzzled by the accident.

Initial reports suggest the Red Bull team will carry out a full inspection of the RB22 to determine the exact cause of the sudden loss of control. Despite the heavy impact, Verstappen’s earlier lap was good enough to secure fifth place on the starting grid. George Russell eventually claimed pole position after stewards reviewed the yellow-flag incident and confirmed his lap was legal, while Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top three.
