The opening practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix was briefly halted after Red Bull-backed rookie driver Isack Hadjar crashed heavily at the famous Swimming Pool section of the street circuit.
Monaco is widely regarded as one of the most challenging venues on the Formula 1 calendar, with its narrow streets, unforgiving barriers, and virtually no room for error. Drivers are required to operate with absolute precision, particularly during practice sessions when they are pushing to understand grip levels and fine-tune their cars for the rest of the weekend.
Hadjar experienced that challenge firsthand during FP1 when he lost control of his RB22 while attacking the high-speed Swimming Pool chicane. As he entered the sequence of corners, the car suddenly stepped out beneath him, leaving him unable to recover before making contact with the barriers.
The impact caused significant damage to the front of the car. The collision ripped off the front wing and also detached one of the wheels, scattering debris across the track. Race control immediately responded by deploying the red flag, bringing the session to a temporary stop while marshals cleared the damaged components and ensured the circuit was safe for running to resume.
The interruption marked the first red flag of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend and served as an early reminder of how quickly fortunes can change around the streets of Monte Carlo. Even experienced drivers can find themselves caught out by the circuit’s unique characteristics, and rookies often face an even steeper learning curve.
Despite the severity of the crash, Hadjar was able to communicate with his team immediately after the incident. Concerned engineers quickly checked on the young driver over team radio, asking whether he was unharmed following the impact.
Fortunately, Hadjar confirmed that he was fine physically, although he appeared puzzled by what had caused the accident. In his radio response, the French driver said he was okay but admitted he did not understand why the rear of the car had suddenly broken away. He also apologized to the team for the damage sustained during the incident.
The crash represented a frustrating start to the weekend for Hadjar, who had been hoping to maximize valuable track time at one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits. Practice sessions in Monaco are particularly important because drivers need as many laps as possible to build confidence and gradually increase their speed around the tight layout.
For the team, the accident created additional work as mechanics rushed to repair the damaged car before the next session. Monaco weekends often leave little margin for mistakes, and any lost running can have a significant impact on preparations for qualifying, which is widely considered the most important session of the weekend due to the difficulty of overtaking during the race.
