George Russell has admitted that Ferrari’s performance at the Spanish Grand Prix has sent a clear warning to Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton’s victory showing that the Italian team is becoming a serious contender in the fight at the front of the Formula 1 grid.
Mercedes suffered its first defeat of the 2026 season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as Hamilton delivered a commanding drive to secure his maiden race victory since joining Ferrari. The result marked a significant breakthrough for the Scuderia and highlighted the impact of the major upgrades introduced on the SF26 ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
Ferrari arrived in Barcelona hoping their latest development package would help close the gap to Mercedes, which had dominated much of the season. However, the improvements appeared to exceed expectations, with Hamilton producing exceptional pace throughout the race to claim a memorable win.
Russell acknowledged that Ferrari’s sudden rise in performance came as a surprise to Mercedes and warned that the team from Maranello is unlikely to fade away in the coming races.
The British driver revealed that Mercedes had not anticipated such a dramatic step forward from Ferrari, particularly over race distance. While Mercedes had been confident about its prospects heading into the weekend, Hamilton’s performance changed the picture significantly.
According to Russell, Ferrari’s speed was impressive enough to raise concerns within the Mercedes camp. He suggested that the victory was not simply the result of favourable circumstances but rather evidence that Ferrari’s upgrades have genuinely strengthened the car.
Reflecting on the race, Russell admitted that both he and the team were taken aback by Ferrari’s pace. He described Hamilton’s performance as remarkable and indicated that Mercedes now expects Ferrari to remain a major threat for the remainder of the season.
“They’re coming,” Russell warned when discussing Ferrari’s resurgence, underlining his belief that the championship battle could become much more competitive in the races ahead.
Russell’s own afternoon proved frustrating despite showing strong pace throughout the weekend. After delivering encouraging performances in practice and qualifying, the Mercedes driver appeared well placed to secure a podium finish on race day.
For much of the race, Russell was running in the top three and looked set to add another strong result to his championship campaign. However, the closing stages proved more difficult as he struggled to maintain the pace he had shown earlier in the event.
His team-mate, Kimi Antonelli, managed to overtake him and initially appeared destined to finish ahead. Yet Antonelli’s race ended in disappointment after suffering a terminal mechanical failure that forced him out of contention.
The retirement ultimately allowed Russell to gain a position, but he still felt that his overall race performance had not matched the standards he had set during the earlier stages of the weekend.
Looking back on his Barcelona outing, Russell explained that Friday and Saturday had been particularly positive, with the car feeling competitive and consistent. He felt comfortable during the opening stint of the Grand Prix and was satisfied with how the race initially unfolded.
However, as the event progressed, he found it increasingly difficult to extract the same level of performance from the car. The final two stints proved more challenging, leaving him unable to challenge at the very front as Hamilton surged to victory.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on a stronger result, Russell remained encouraged by the progress Mercedes has shown and welcomed the opportunity to return to one of Formula 1’s most familiar circuits.
With Ferrari now demonstrating race-winning pace and Hamilton delivering a statement victory in red, the battle at the top of Formula 1 appears set to intensify. Mercedes may still lead the way overall, but Russell’s comments suggest the team is fully aware that Ferrari has become a genuine championship threat.
