The FIA has officially confirmed the final classification for the 2026 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix following the conclusion of a post-race investigation involving Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.
The race at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit delivered plenty of excitement, with Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli converting his pole position into another impressive victory. The Italian controlled the race from the front, crossing the finish line ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen secured the final place on the podium for Red Bull.
Attention after the chequered flag quickly shifted to Hamilton, who finished fourth but was placed under investigation for an unsafe release during a pit stop. The incident occurred when Ferrari released the seven-time world champion into the pit lane, resulting in his car making contact with one of the team’s mechanics. Fortunately, the mechanic was not injured, though the incident prompted race stewards to review Ferrari’s pit stop procedures.
Following their investigation, the FIA ruled that Ferrari was responsible for the unsafe release. Instead of issuing a time penalty or sporting sanction against Hamilton, the governing body imposed a financial penalty on the Scuderia. Ferrari received a €30,000 fine, with €10,000 of that amount suspended for the next 12 months provided the team does not commit another similar offence during that period.
The decision meant Hamilton retained fourth place in the official race results, avoiding any change to the finishing order. His result also proved significant in the championship battle, allowing him to move ahead of former Mercedes teammate George Russell into second place in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings.
Antonelli’s victory further strengthened his remarkable 2026 campaign as the Mercedes driver continued his outstanding run of form. Leclerc secured another valuable podium finish for Ferrari, while Verstappen maximized Red Bull’s result with third place despite being unable to challenge for the victory.
McLaren collected solid points with Oscar Piastri finishing fifth and Lando Norris recovering to seventh after starting further down the order. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar impressed with sixth place, while Audi celebrated another points finish thanks to Gabriel Bortoleto in eighth and Nico Hulkenberg in 13th.
Racing Bulls also enjoyed a productive afternoon as rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed ninth, with Liam Lawson finishing 12th. Alpine rounded out the points through Franco Colapinto in 10th, while Pierre Gasly narrowly missed out in 11th.
The race also featured three retirements. George Russell’s Belgian Grand Prix ended in disappointment after an early incident forced him out of the race, while Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Cadillac’s Sergio Perez also failed to reach the finish.
With the FIA’s verdict now confirmed, the Belgian Grand Prix classification remains unchanged, officially closing another dramatic weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
