Valtteri Bottas could already be facing uncertainty over his future with Cadillac Formula 1 Team despite the 2026 season being only a handful of races old. Fresh reports emerging during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend have suggested the experienced Finn may be under pressure as the American outfit evaluates its long-term driver line-up ahead of next year.
Cadillac entered Formula One in 2026 knowing their debut campaign would likely be difficult, with the team focused more on building foundations than immediately challenging at the front of the grid. However, after five rounds of the championship, the squad remains without a single point, increasing scrutiny on both of their drivers.
Bottas and team-mate Sergio Perez have endured a frustrating start to the season, struggling to compete consistently against more established midfield rivals. While the team’s performance issues have clearly played a major role in their poor results, speculation around the drivers has inevitably started to grow as pressure mounts inside the paddock.
At this stage, the only realistic benchmark for the two Cadillac drivers is each other. Their qualifying battle has been extremely close throughout the opening races, with Perez narrowly leading the head-to-head count 3-2 following the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in Montreal. Race pace between the pair has also remained relatively even, making it difficult to place blame solely on either driver for Cadillac’s disappointing start.
Despite that, rumours surrounding Bottas’ future intensified after comments made on Sky Sports Italia during coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix. According to the Italian broadcast, Bottas’ seat is reportedly at “serious risk” ahead of the 2027 season, with discussions already beginning about potential alternatives for the team.
The speculation has quickly attracted attention across the Formula One paddock, especially due to the mention of Cadillac reserve driver Colton Herta as a possible replacement candidate. Herta, one of America’s most highly rated young talents, has been strongly linked with a future move into Formula One for several years and is currently working closely with Cadillac as part of their long-term project.
Sky Sports Italia suggested that Herta’s reputation is continuing to rise, particularly as he adapts to the European racing environment and gains valuable experience in Formula 2. The American driver is still in his first season in the F1 feeder category, but many within the sport believe he possesses the speed and aggressive style needed to eventually succeed at the top level.
The reports also claimed that Perez has shown no signs of considering retirement, potentially strengthening his position within the team moving forward. With Cadillac expected to place huge value on experience during their early years in Formula One, Perez’s long-term future may currently appear more secure than Bottas’.
Even so, there has been no official indication from Cadillac that a driver change is under consideration. Team bosses have repeatedly stressed the importance of stability during their first season, and replacing a driver after only five races would represent a dramatic move for such a new operation.
Bottas himself remains one of the most experienced figures on the Formula One grid, having previously raced for powerhouse teams including Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and Alfa Romeo F1 Team. His technical feedback and calm approach were seen as major reasons why Cadillac selected him to help guide the team through its crucial opening years.
For now, the rumours remain purely speculative, but Formula One’s fast-moving environment means pressure can escalate quickly. If Cadillac continue to struggle near the back of the grid, questions about the future of both drivers are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
