Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has questioned whether the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix should go ahead as planned at the end of the 2026 season, citing ongoing security concerns in the Middle East.
The races in Lusail and Yas Marina are scheduled to serve as the final two rounds of the championship, taking place on November 29 and December 6 respectively. However, continuing conflict in the region has raised doubts over whether Formula 1 will be able to hold both events.
Verstappen’s comments come after Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton recently indicated that he was comfortable with travelling to the region, saying that the situation appeared to be under control. Verstappen, however, expressed a more cautious view and argued that safety should take priority over sporting commitments.
Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Viaplay, the Red Bull driver stressed that his concerns were not directed at Qatar or the United Arab Emirates themselves, but rather at the potential risks created by conflicts in surrounding areas.
“I usually look forward to visiting these nations, but if there’s a war close by or ongoing conflicts in neighboring countries, I simply don’t think it’s wise to go,” Verstappen said.
The Dutchman also made it clear that contractual agreements should not automatically determine whether Formula 1 travels to a potentially dangerous region. According to Verstappen, the safety of everyone involved in the championship should remain the primary consideration.
He acknowledged that the final decision is not his to make, despite the potential sporting consequences. Verstappen pointed out that Formula 1 management, rather than individual drivers, will ultimately decide whether the scheduled races can take place.
The comments could add further pressure on Formula 1 as officials assess the security situation ahead of the final races of the season. Any decision to cancel, postpone or relocate the events would have significant implications for the championship, teams, drivers and local organisers.
