Max Verstappen and his Verstappen Racing outfit faced an early setback at the Nürburgring 24 Hours after a penalty severely affected their challenge for victory during the opening stages of the famous endurance race.
The team’s #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 received a 32-second penalty less than an hour after the race began, instantly dropping the car away from the leading group on the demanding Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.
The punishment came while the Mercedes-AMG entry was running strongly near the front, forcing the team into an early strategic rethink and giving rival manufacturers a valuable advantage in one of the season’s most fiercely contested GT3 events.
Although Verstappen is the headline driver for the team, the reigning Formula 1 champion was not behind the wheel at the start. Instead, experienced endurance racer Dani Juncadella took the opening stint and immediately showed impressive pace.
Starting from fourth on the grid, Juncadella made a strong getaway and quickly climbed into second place during the opening lap as the field charged through the legendary Nordschleife. The Mercedes-AMG looked highly competitive from the beginning, showing the speed needed to fight at the front.
The strong early performance confirmed Verstappen Racing’s status as one of the favourites heading into the race. The team had already delivered solid pace during qualifying sessions and appeared capable of competing for overall victory against several factory-backed rivals.
Verstappen is sharing the car this weekend with Dani Juncadella, Lucas Auer and Jules Gounon, creating one of the strongest driver line-ups in the field. All four drivers bring major GT and endurance racing experience to the challenge of tackling the demanding Nürburgring circuit.
However, the race changed dramatically after officials issued the time penalty. In endurance racing, even a short sanction can have huge consequences because the leading cars are often separated by only small margins.
The penalty forced the Mercedes squad to lose valuable time and track position during the pit cycle, making recovery far more difficult over such a competitive field.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours is considered one of motorsport’s toughest endurance races due to its unpredictable weather, heavy traffic and the unforgiving nature of the Nordschleife. Those factors often create unexpected drama throughout the event.
Despite the early setback, Verstappen Racing remained in the fight and continued pushing forward, hoping their strong pace and strategy could help them recover lost ground during the remaining hours of the race.
For Verstappen, the event also highlights his growing interest in GT and endurance racing beyond Formula 1 as he continues expanding his experience in different categories of motorsport.
