Sainz’s Rare Penalty Reshuffles British Grand Prix Results as Ferrari Celebrates Silverstone Success
The final classification of the 2026 British Grand Prix underwent a significant change after the stewards handed Carlos Sainz an unusual one-lap penalty, dramatically affecting the Williams driver’s finishing position. Sainz, who had originally crossed the line in 12th place after a determined recovery drive, was pushed down to 17th in the official standings following the post-race ruling. Such a severe penalty is rarely seen in modern Formula 1 and became one of the biggest talking points after the race had concluded.
The revised order behind the leading drivers reflected the impact of the decision, even though the battle for victory remained unchanged. Williams experienced further disappointment when Alexander Albon retired before the end of the race, leaving the team with little to celebrate despite Sainz initially appearing on course for a respectable finish. Audi also suffered a setback after Nico Hülkenberg was forced to retire, although Gabriel Bortoleto salvaged valuable points by bringing the team’s remaining car home inside the top ten.
Following the revised classification, Charles Leclerc was officially confirmed as the British Grand Prix winner. George Russell secured second place, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium to give Ferrari an outstanding result at Silverstone. Lando Norris finished fourth ahead of Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, who rounded out the top ten. Oscar Piastri narrowly missed out on the points in 11th, followed by Oliver Bearman, Esteban Ocon, Sergio Pérez, Kimi Antonelli and Valtteri Bottas. Sainz dropped to 17th after his penalty, ahead of Alonso and Stroll, while Verstappen, Albon and Hülkenberg were all classified as retirements.
Although Ferrari’s victory was never threatened by the stewards’ decision, the post-race penalty imposed on Sainz became one of the defining stories of the weekend. It served as another reminder that Formula 1 results are not always final when the race ends, with investigations capable of reshaping the official standings. As Ferrari celebrated a memorable triumph through Leclerc’s victory and Hamilton’s podium finish, the rest of the grid quickly shifted its focus to the next round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship in Belgium.
