The FIA has officially confirmed the final classification for the 2026 Formula 1 British Grand Prix following the completion of all post-race investigations and the application of late penalties. While the chequered flag marked the end of an action-packed contest at Silverstone, several steward decisions after the race slightly reshuffled the finishing order and finalized the official results.
Ferrari emerged as the biggest winner of the weekend as Charles Leclerc secured a memorable victory, returning the famous Italian team to the top step of the podium. The Monegasque driver produced a composed and controlled performance throughout the race, surviving intense pressure and benefiting from late-race drama to claim maximum points.
Although Leclerc celebrated the win, fortune also played a role in the outcome. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli had been rapidly closing the gap during the closing stages and looked capable of overtaking the Ferrari driver. With approximately 15 laps remaining, Antonelli appeared to have the pace advantage and seemed on course to challenge for victory.
However, his hopes of taking the lead disappeared when his Mercedes developed a mechanical problem. The issue severely affected the car’s steering, forcing Antonelli into the pit lane on two separate occasions as the team attempted to diagnose and resolve the problem. Despite the efforts of his crew, the young Italian continued to struggle with handling, making it difficult to keep the car on the racing line.
His difficult afternoon became even worse when race stewards penalized him for repeatedly exceeding track limits. Antonelli was handed a five-second time penalty after multiple violations, a punishment that proved especially costly because the field had been tightly packed behind a late Safety Car.
The combination of his mechanical issues and the penalty dramatically altered his final finishing position. Instead of securing valuable championship points, Antonelli fell from ninth place to 16th in the official classification, leaving Silverstone empty-handed despite showing race-winning pace for much of the afternoon.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton also faced uncertainty after the finish. The seven-time world champion came under investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement during the race, creating concerns that he could receive a time penalty capable of costing him a podium finish.
Following a detailed review of the available evidence, the FIA stewards decided that Hamilton’s actions did not justify a sporting penalty. Instead, they issued only a reprimand, allowing the British driver to retain third place in front of his home crowd. The decision ensured Ferrari celebrated a double podium finish, with Leclerc taking victory and Hamilton completing the top three.
George Russell secured second place for Mercedes after another consistent performance. Although unable to challenge Leclerc for the victory in the closing stages, Russell capitalized on Antonelli’s misfortune to finish just behind the Ferrari and add another podium to his season tally.
McLaren’s Lando Norris narrowly missed out on a podium finish after crossing the line in fourth position. Red Bull newcomer Isack Hadjar continued his impressive form by finishing fifth, while Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson claimed sixth after another competitive display.
Lawson’s teammate Arvid Lindblad added further success for Racing Bulls by taking seventh place, highlighting the team’s strong weekend. Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto crossed the line eighth to secure more valuable championship points, while Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto completed the top ten.
Oscar Piastri narrowly missed the points in 11th place for McLaren, finishing ahead of Williams driver Carlos Sainz. Haas teammates Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon occupied 13th and 14th respectively, while Cadillac’s Sergio Perez rounded out the top 15.
Antonelli’s five-second penalty dropped him to 16th in the finalized standings, ahead of fellow Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas in 17th.
Aston Martin endured another frustrating afternoon. Fernando Alonso experienced problems before the race even officially began after stopping during the formation lap. Fortunately, the Spaniard managed to restart his car and joined the race, eventually finishing one lap behind the leaders in 18th position.
His teammate Lance Stroll also attracted the attention of race officials. The Canadian repeatedly exceeded track limits during the race and accumulated three separate five-second penalties, resulting in a total of 15 seconds being added to his race time. Despite receiving multiple penalties, Stroll remained 19th because the additional time did not alter his overall finishing position relative to the cars around him.
The race also featured several retirements. Max Verstappen suffered one of the biggest disappointments of the afternoon after crashing out during the closing laps while battling near the front of the field. The Red Bull driver had looked set to challenge for another podium finish before losing control and ending his race prematurely.
Williams driver Alex Albon also failed to reach the finish, while Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg retired before completing the full race distance, leaving the event with three official retirements.
Antonelli nevertheless recorded the fastest lap of the race, producing a time of 1 minute 31.777 seconds on lap 37. However, because he ultimately finished outside the top ten after his penalty, the achievement did not translate into an additional championship point.
