George Russell delivered a strong statement ahead of qualifying for the Barcelona Grand Prix by finishing fastest in the third and final practice session on Saturday morning. The Mercedes driver topped the timing screens with a best lap of 1:15.679, giving him a confidence boost as he looks to reignite his 2026 championship challenge.
After Friday’s opening practice session featured several rookie appearances, all 22 full-time drivers returned to action for FP3 as teams completed their final preparations before qualifying. Russell made the most of the hour-long session, edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by just over two-tenths of a second.
The British driver arrives in Barcelona eager to respond after slipping behind teammate Kimi Antonelli in the championship battle earlier in the season. His pace throughout the weekend has suggested Mercedes could be a serious contender for pole position.
Piastri continued McLaren’s encouraging form by securing second place, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top three. The margins at the front were extremely tight, with less than a quarter of a second separating Russell, Piastri, Leclerc and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who finished fourth.
Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five for Ferrari. Although the seven-time world champion was over seven-tenths behind Russell’s benchmark, he remained comfortably inside the leading group as Ferrari continued to search for the perfect setup ahead of qualifying.
Defending world champion Max Verstappen finished sixth for Red Bull, narrowly ahead of Antonelli. The young Mercedes star endured a frustrating session that was disrupted by traffic, leading to several complaints over team radio. Antonelli voiced his frustration to race engineer Peter Bonnington during the session, and the FIA later noted an incident involving the Italian for alleged erratic driving. The matter is expected to be reviewed by the stewards after the session.
Despite the interruptions, Antonelli still managed to finish seventh, although he ended the session more than eight-tenths behind his teammate Russell.
Further down the order, Isack Hadjar impressed by placing eighth for Red Bull, while Audi drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto continued to show signs of progress. Hulkenberg secured ninth place, with Arvid Lindblad splitting the two Audi cars in tenth for Racing Bulls.
The session was briefly interrupted by a red flag following an accident involving Valtteri Bottas. The Cadillac driver lost control at the exit of Turn 11 after running through the gravel and crashed into the barriers with just over 25 minutes remaining.
Speaking over team radio immediately after the incident, Bottas reported that he had lost his brake pedal before the crash. The setback adds to what has already been a challenging debut campaign with Cadillac.
At the bottom of the standings, Aston Martin struggled for pace, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finishing 20th and 22nd respectively. Sergio Perez placed 19th for Cadillac, while the Alpine, Haas and Williams drivers occupied the middle of the field.
With practice now complete, attention turns to qualifying, where Russell, McLaren and Ferrari appear set to battle for pole position, while Antonelli will be hoping for a cleaner session after a difficult FP3.
