George Russell returned to winning ways with a commanding performance at the 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, leading Mercedes to another impressive result at the Red Bull Ring. The British driver claimed his second victory of the season, crossing the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen after a tense battle that lasted for much of the race.
Russell’s triumph marked his first win since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and allowed him to move ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ championship standings. Despite relentless pressure from Verstappen during the closing stages, the Mercedes driver remained composed to secure victory by just over 1.6 seconds.
Verstappen delighted the home crowd by extracting the maximum performance from Red Bull’s RB22. Although the four-time world champion was unable to claim his first victory of the campaign, he delivered one of his strongest drives of the year, splitting the dominant Mercedes duo to finish second.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third after spending the final laps chasing Verstappen. The young Italian finished less than two seconds behind race winner Russell and only three-tenths of a second adrift of the Red Bull, underlining Mercedes’ impressive pace throughout the weekend.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri continued his consistent run of form by taking fourth place, while Ferrari endured a difficult afternoon despite showing encouraging speed earlier in the weekend. Lewis Hamilton initially looked capable of challenging for a podium but significant tyre degradation and overheating issues forced the seven-time world champion to settle for fifth. During the race, Hamilton was instructed to change his power unit settings to help cool his Ferrari, allowing him to reach the finish despite the technical concerns.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar enjoyed another solid outing by finishing sixth, ahead of McLaren’s reigning world champion Lando Norris in seventh. Charles Leclerc salvaged eighth place for Ferrari after struggling with tyre wear throughout the race.
Racing Bulls celebrated a double points finish as Liam Lawson claimed ninth despite reporting over team radio that his car was on fire during the opening laps. Fortunately, the issue was managed without forcing his retirement. Rookie Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10 to collect another valuable championship point.
Further down the order, Audi drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg finished 11th and 12th respectively, ahead of Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, Haas rookie Oliver Bearman and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. Esteban Ocon, Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso completed the list of classified finishers.
The race also featured several retirements, with extreme temperatures creating reliability concerns across the field. Cadillac endured another disappointing afternoon after both of its cars retired within the opening five laps. Valtteri Bottas was forced out after his brakes caught fire, while Sergio Perez reported smoke inside the cockpit before parking his car.
Carlos Sainz’s race ended on lap 24 after a mechanical failure forced his Williams to stop on track, while Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll suffered his fifth retirement of the season following a suspected ERS issue.
