The 2026 Formula 1 season produced one of its most dramatic moments after the British Grand Prix, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was stripped of victory following a post-race FIA technical inspection. The ruling transformed the final result at Silverstone, handing Mercedes driver George Russell an unexpected home victory and denying Ferrari what would have been the team’s landmark 250th Grand Prix win.
The race itself had already been packed with drama. Unpredictable British weather created constantly changing track conditions, forcing teams to make crucial strategy decisions throughout the afternoon. Safety cars, changing tire choices, and intense battles across the field ensured that the Silverstone crowd witnessed one of the most entertaining races of the season.
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli started from pole position after an impressive qualifying performance, raising hopes of another breakthrough result. However, his race quickly unraveled when technical issues forced him down the order, leaving him unable to challenge for the podium.
With Antonelli out of contention, Charles Leclerc took control at the front. The Ferrari driver expertly managed the changing conditions and appeared on course to end his lengthy wait for victory. Although the governing body did not treat the issue as a sporting infringement, technical breaches are handled under strict rules. Any car found outside the legal specifications is typically excluded from the results, regardless of whether the advantage affected the race outcome.
Following the inspection, the FIA stewards officially disqualified Leclerc from the British Grand Prix, removing him entirely from the final classification. The decision erased Ferrari’s victory and immediately reshaped the race results.
George Russell was promoted to first place, giving Mercedes its first victory of the season and providing the British driver with a memorable home win at Silverstone. Russell had already benefited from the late safety car strategically, but the post-race disqualification ultimately elevated him to the top step of the podium.
Lewis Hamilton also gained from the revised classification, moving up to second place to complete a Mercedes one-two finish in front of the home crowd. Every driver who had originally finished behind Leclerc also inherited one position, allowing several midfield teams to collect additional championship points.
