Formula One has been thrown into controversy following a dramatic post-race decision that saw Charles Leclerc stripped of victory in the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Ferrari driver was disqualified after post-race technical inspections, promoting Mercedes’ George Russell to the top step of the podium.
Leclerc had originally taken the chequered flag after a thrilling afternoon packed with changing weather, tactical battles, multiple safety car periods, and a late crash involving Max Verstappen. The win appeared to be a landmark achievement, giving Ferrari its 250th Grand Prix victory while ending Leclerc’s lengthy wait for another Formula One triumph. George Russell finished second on the road, with Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton completing the podium despite serving a five-second penalty during the race.
Ferrari’s celebrations were short-lived, however, as FIA officials carried out their routine technical checks after the race. During those inspections, Leclerc’s car was found to have violated Formula One’s technical regulations. The infringement resulted in his disqualification, removing him from the final classification and rewriting the official race results.
With Leclerc excluded from the standings, George Russell was elevated to race winner, handing Mercedes a valuable victory in an increasingly competitive 2026 campaign. Hamilton also benefited from the revised classification, moving up to second place, while every driver behind them gained one position in the final results.
The revised outcome provides a major boost to Russell’s championship hopes. Although he had acknowledged after the race that the late safety car had worked in his favour, the promotion gives both him and Mercedes the maximum haul of points, strengthening their challenges in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.
The British Grand Prix had already delivered plenty of drama before the post-race ruling. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli started from pole position but encountered technical problems that dropped him through the field, ultimately finishing outside the points. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s late crash triggered a safety car that remained on track until the finish, denying fans the exciting final-lap showdown many had hoped to see.
Leclerc’s disqualification has now become the biggest talking point of the Silverstone weekend, dramatically altering the official result and adding another remarkable chapter to an already unpredictable 2026 Formula One season.
