Aston Martin’s difficult 2026 Formula 1 campaign has taken another painful turn after both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were handed massive grid penalties ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Silverstone-based team has endured a frustrating season, with very few moments of encouragement. Alonso briefly gave the team something to celebrate at the Dutch Grand Prix after securing ninth place, but that result was quickly followed by another difficult run of races.
Aston Martin suffered a double retirement at Monza before the team endured another disappointing weekend in Madrid, where one car failed to finish and the other could manage only 17th place. Their prospects in Baku have now become even more complicated after both drivers were forced to take multiple power unit components beyond their permitted allocation.
Alonso has been hit with a 25-place penalty after Aston Martin installed a fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger and ninth Power Unit Ancillary Component (PU-ANC) of the season.
Stroll has received a 20-place penalty after taking a sixth turbocharger, seventh energy store, sixth control electronics unit and eighth PU-ANC.
Together, the penalties amount to a staggering 45 grid places, although neither driver will necessarily lose exactly that number of positions on the starting grid.
Under the current Formula 1 regulations, any driver who accumulates more than 15 grid places through power unit component penalties is required to start from the back of the grid. As a result, both Aston Martin drivers are effectively destined for the rear of the field once qualifying is completed.
The penalties add to what has already been a challenging period for Aston Martin, with the team struggling to consistently compete near the front of the midfield.
Off the track, the future of Alonso remains another major talking point. The two-time world champion has yet to make a definitive decision about whether he will continue racing in Formula 1 beyond his current commitment, leaving Aston Martin uncertain about its driver line-up.
Team executive Mike Krack recently acknowledged that the team remains keen to continue with Alonso but must respect whatever decision the veteran driver ultimately makes.
“We have made it clear all through, but we need to respect what Fernando’s thoughts are,” Krack said.
With both cars already facing severe grid penalties and Alonso’s future still unresolved, Aston Martin’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend is shaping up to be another major test for the struggling team.
