Lewis Hamilton was handed a five-second time penalty by the FIA during the Belgian Grand Prix after stewards ruled that he was responsible for an opening-lap collision with Mercedes driver George Russell.
The incident took place in the early stages of the race as the two British drivers battled aggressively for fourth position around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Hamilton, driving for Ferrari, used the slipstream on the long straight after Eau Rouge to gain a significant speed advantage, allowing him to draw alongside Russell as they approached Turn Three.
As the pair raced wheel-to-wheel through the corner, contact was made between the two cars. The impact sent Russell spinning across the circuit before his Mercedes slid into the gravel.
