Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has officially confirmed a major rethink of its revolutionary 2026 engine regulations after widespread criticism from teams, drivers, and fans during the opening races of the new era. The decision marks one of the quickest and most dramatic technical reversals in recent F1 history, with the sport now moving away from the heavily electrified power units that were introduced at the start of the 2026 campaign.
At the beginning of the 2026 season, Formula 1 entered a completely new technical chapter. The sport introduced redesigned chassis and advanced hybrid power units built around a near-equal balance between traditional internal combustion engines and electric power. The aim was ambitious: improve sustainability, encourage new manufacturers to join the grid, and help F1 achieve its long-term environmental targets.
Under the original rules, the electrical side of the power unit became significantly more powerful than before. The MGU-K system saw its output increase dramatically to 350kW, while the expensive and complicated MGU-H component was removed entirely. Officials hoped these changes would create closer racing, more overtaking opportunities, and greater relevance to modern automotive technology.
The new regulations also attracted major manufacturers into Formula 1. Companies such as Audi committed to entering the sport, while Honda strengthened its involvement again under the updated framework. The FIA believed the blend of sustainable fuels and advanced hybrid technology would define the future of the championship for many years.
However, despite the optimism surrounding the launch of the regulations, concerns quickly began to emerge during the opening races of the season. Drivers complained about excessive energy management requirements, while fans and analysts criticized what many described as artificial racing characteristics. Instead of allowing drivers to attack continuously, the new cars often forced competitors into heavy “lift and coast” driving styles to conserve battery energy throughout races.
One of the loudest critics of the regulations was Max Verstappen. The multiple world champion openly questioned the direction of the sport and compared the new cars to “Formula E on steroids.” He argued that the excessive reliance on battery management damaged the natural flow of racing and reduced the excitement traditionally associated with Formula 1. Other drivers reportedly shared similar frustrations. The energy deployment restrictions created inconsistent performance levels across laps, while some circuits exposed major weaknesses in the cars’ ability to maintain competitive speeds late in straights. Critics argued that drivers were spending more time managing systems than actually racing flat-out.
Although the 2026 cars did produce more overtaking in some races, not everyone viewed that as a positive development. Some fans felt the overtakes looked artificial because cars would suddenly lose electrical deployment halfway down straights, making passes too easy. The racing style was described by some observers as “yo-yo racing,” where speed advantages changed dramatically depending on battery status.
In response to these growing concerns, the FIA held discussions with teams, manufacturers, and Formula 1 officials regarding possible adjustments. Those conversations eventually led to a groundbreaking agreement that will significantly alter the engine balance over the next two seasons.
According to the FIA’s confirmed roadmap, the current 53/47 split between internal combustion and electric power will begin changing in 2027. The governing body plans to increase the role of the traditional engine while reducing the dependency on electrical deployment. By 2028, Formula 1 aims to operate under a 60/40 balance in favor of combustion power.
The FIA also confirmed several specific technical changes that will help achieve this transition. Internal combustion engine output will rise progressively over the coming seasons, while fuel flow allowances will increase as well. Meanwhile, the maximum standard output of the MGU-K system will be reduced from its current 350kW level. These changes are intended to create more natural racing conditions and reduce the amount of extreme energy conservation currently required.
Under the proposed plan, internal combustion engine power will increase from 400kW in 2026 to 420kW in 2027 before reaching 450kW in 2028. Fuel flow rates will also rise to support the additional engine performance. At the same time, the electric system’s maximum continuous power will decrease to 300kW beginning in 2027.
The FIA explained that the adjustments are specifically designed to improve the overall racing product while preserving the sustainability goals of the championship. Officials stressed that they still believe hybrid technology and sustainable fuels remain central to Formula 1’s future, but acknowledged that refinements were necessary after the difficult early races of the new era.
In its official statement, the FIA said the proposed modifications are intended to solve issues related to energy deployment and fuel flow characteristics while making qualifying sessions more “flat-out.” The governing body also stated that it wanted to preserve the positive elements of the 2026 regulations while reducing the negative side effects that had become apparent during races.
The proposed package will now move through the formal approval process. The FIA plans to present the changes to the World Motor Sport Council later this month, with teams expected to receive early clarity regarding the future direction of the regulations.
Interestingly, this may not be the final major engine shift Formula 1 makes in the coming years. Reports have already suggested that senior figures inside the sport are considering an eventual return to naturally aspirated V8 engines powered entirely by sustainable fuels later in the decade. Such a move would represent another dramatic transformation for Formula 1 and could bring back the louder engine sounds many fans still miss from previous generations.
The rapid regulation rethink highlights just how challenging it is for Formula 1 to balance sustainability, manufacturer interests, performance, and entertainment all at the same time. While the 2026 rules successfully brought innovation and attracted new companies, the opening races revealed weaknesses that could not be ignored. The FIA’s swift response shows that the sport is willing to adapt quickly rather than allow dissatisfaction to grow further.
