
FIA Introduces New Speed Restrictions for Monaco Grand Prix Following Driver Concerns
The FIA has confirmed a significant regulatory adjustment ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, introducing new measures designed to limit the top speeds of Formula One cars around the iconic street circuit. The move comes after concerns were raised by drivers, teams, and safety officials regarding the unique challenges posed by the 2026 generation of Formula One machinery on one of the sport’s most demanding tracks.
Monaco has long been regarded as the crown jewel of the Formula One calendar. Its narrow streets, unforgiving barriers, and limited overtaking opportunities have made it one of the most prestigious and technically challenging venues in motorsport. However, the arrival of the new 2026 regulations has presented fresh challenges for the governing body, prompting a series of unprecedented measures aimed at ensuring both safety and competitive balance.
One of the biggest concerns stems from the performance characteristics of the new power units. Under the latest regulations, Formula One cars make greater use of electrical power deployment through the MGU-K system. While this has improved efficiency and performance, Monaco’s layout creates a unique scenario where energy recovery is exceptionally effective due to the circuit’s many slow-speed corners and heavy braking zones. As a result, drivers can maintain high levels of battery charge throughout the lap, allowing them to access more electrical power than they would at many other circuits.
The FIA feared that unrestricted deployment of this electrical energy could result in excessive speeds on several sections of the circuit, particularly along the start-finish straight, the tunnel section, and the climb towards Massenet. These areas are immediately followed by tight corners and heavy braking zones, increasing the potential risks associated with higher approach speeds.
To address these concerns, the governing body has mandated a special engine mode known as “Rev 1” for use throughout the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. This mode alters the way electrical power is delivered, reducing the amount of assistance available as speeds increase. Rather than allowing maximum power deployment until close to 290 km/h, the new configuration begins reducing electrical output once cars exceed approximately 200 km/h. By the time a car reaches around 300 km/h, battery deployment will effectively cease altogether.
Officials believe this measure will significantly reduce peak speeds without dramatically affecting the racing spectacle. Instead of changing the maximum power available to drivers, the FIA has focused on modifying how that power is distributed across the speed range. This approach enables teams to retain much of the performance benefits of the hybrid systems while ensuring that cars remain within safer operating limits for Monaco’s unique environment.
The engine mapping change is not the only adjustment being implemented. The FIA has also decided to disable the active aerodynamic “straight mode” that has been used at other circuits during the 2026 season. Normally, this feature allows drivers to reduce aerodynamic drag on straights by adjusting wing configurations, increasing top speed and improving overtaking opportunities. However, Monaco’s layout offers limited areas where the system can be used safely.
According to FIA officials, activation zones for the system are typically selected only in sections where cars are not operating at the absolute limit of tyre grip. Monaco’s streets leave little margin for error, and concerns were raised that the use of active aerodynamic modes could compromise stability during braking and corner entry. Consequently, drivers will complete the entire lap without access to straight mode, making Monaco the first event of the season to operate under such restrictions.
Despite these limitations, drivers are expected to retain access to overtake mode, allowing strategic deployment of additional electrical power in selected situations. However, even this feature will operate under modified parameters designed to align with the FIA’s safety objectives. The governing body hopes that these adjustments will strike a balance between preserving competitive racing and preventing excessive speeds on a circuit renowned for its unforgiving nature.
Interestingly, several drivers have welcomed the changes. Many competitors believe Monaco may actually become one of the more enjoyable events under the new regulations because the circuit’s characteristics naturally reduce some of the energy-management complications experienced elsewhere. With shorter straights and frequent braking zones, drivers anticipate spending less time worrying about battery conservation and more time focusing on traditional racecraft.
Some have suggested that Monaco could showcase the strengths of the new generation of Formula One cars. The 2026 machines are lighter, narrower, and more agile than their predecessors, qualities that could prove advantageous around the tight confines of Monte Carlo. Drivers have expressed optimism that these characteristics may improve the overall racing experience, even with the newly introduced restrictions.
