The FIA has confirmed a significant rule adjustment ahead of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, introducing measures that will effectively limit the maximum speeds Formula 1 cars can reach around the famous street circuit. The decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to manage safety concerns created by the sport’s new generation of cars and power units, which have been introduced under the sweeping 2026 regulations.
Monaco has always been one of the most unique venues on the Formula 1 calendar. Unlike traditional circuits that feature long straights and expansive runoff areas, the streets of Monte Carlo are exceptionally narrow, lined by barriers, and offer very little margin for driver error. While the circuit remains one of the most iconic locations in motorsport, its layout presents challenges that have become even more pronounced with the arrival of the latest F1 machinery.
The 2026 cars are smaller, lighter, and narrower than their predecessors, a change designed to improve racing quality and increase overtaking opportunities. However, the new regulations have also introduced a different approach to power deployment. Modern power units now rely more heavily on electrical energy, with drivers able to access additional performance through advanced battery systems and overtaking modes.
Throughout the opening races of the 2026 season, teams have been learning how to maximize these new power units. The electrical systems provide substantial acceleration, particularly on corner exits, allowing drivers to gain speed much more rapidly than before. While this has added an exciting new element to racing, it has also raised concerns regarding how these cars behave at circuits where space is limited.
Monaco quickly became a focal point of those discussions. Unlike many circuits where energy management is a major challenge, Monaco’s layout features numerous slow corners and heavy braking zones. These characteristics allow drivers to harvest large amounts of energy throughout a lap. As a result, teams can often maintain a surplus of electrical power that can be deployed aggressively when accelerating onto the circuit’s faster sections.
According to the FIA, this creates a potentially dangerous scenario. The combination of powerful electrical deployment and Monaco’s confined environment means drivers could reach unusually high speeds before arriving at corners that require heavy braking. Areas such as the start-finish straight, the climb through Beau Rivage, and the famous tunnel section have been identified as locations where speeds could become excessive.
To address these concerns, the governing body has introduced a special engine mapping configuration that will be mandatory for all competitors during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. The revised setting alters how electrical power is delivered as the cars accelerate.
Under standard conditions elsewhere on the calendar, the electrical system can continue providing maximum assistance until speeds approach approximately 290 km/h before the power output begins to reduce. The battery contribution then gradually decreases as speeds continue to rise.
For Monaco, however, the FIA has ordered a much earlier reduction in electrical deployment. Instead of maintaining peak assistance up to higher speeds, the system will begin reducing output once a car reaches around 200 km/h. The decrease becomes progressively more aggressive, and by the time a driver reaches 300 km/h, electrical assistance will be completely removed.
This represents a major departure from the normal operating mode used at most races. The intention is not to reduce the total performance of the cars but rather to prevent them from reaching speeds that could be considered unsafe for Monaco’s tight and unforgiving layout.
The governing body believes the measure will help ensure drivers approach the circuit’s most challenging braking zones at more manageable speeds. With barriers located close to the racing line and little room for recovery after mistakes, even small reductions in velocity can have a significant impact on safety.
The speed-limiting measure is not the only Monaco-specific adjustment being implemented. The FIA has already confirmed that another feature of the 2026 regulations will also be restricted during the event.
The new active aerodynamic system introduced for the current generation of Formula 1 cars includes what is commonly referred to as “straight mode.” This setup allows aerodynamic surfaces to adjust on straights in order to reduce drag and improve top speed. At Monaco, however, officials have decided that this mode will not be used.
Instead, the front and rear wing elements will remain in their normal configuration throughout each lap. By keeping the aerodynamic surfaces closed, cars will retain higher levels of downforce and avoid the additional speed gains that active aero could otherwise generate.
Safety remains the primary motivation behind the decision. The FIA believes that allowing both aggressive electrical deployment and active aerodynamic assistance on Monaco’s short straights could produce speeds that exceed comfortable limits for the circuit.
Interestingly, many within the paddock believe Monaco could actually suit the new 2026 cars despite these restrictions. Drivers have frequently complained about energy-management requirements at other tracks, where they are often forced to compromise their driving style in order to maximize efficiency.
Monaco’s unique characteristics reduce many of those concerns. Because the circuit naturally provides numerous opportunities to recharge the batteries, drivers are expected to enjoy greater flexibility in how they manage energy throughout a lap. Several competitors have suggested this could result in a more natural driving experience compared to some of the races earlier in the season.
Another factor working in Monaco’s favor is the reduced size and weight of the new cars. For years, many observers argued that Formula 1 machinery had become too large for the principality’s narrow streets. The latest generation of cars addresses some of those criticisms, potentially making them better suited to the historic venue.
The FIA’s intervention highlights the challenges involved in balancing innovation with safety. Formula 1’s new regulations were designed to create exciting racing while advancing automotive technology, but every circuit presents different demands. Monaco’s unique environment requires a tailored approach, and officials have determined that additional safeguards are necessary to ensure the event can be conducted safely.
