The opening laps of the 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix produced extraordinary drama after three separate cars suffered fire-related issues in the intense heat at the Red Bull Ring, forcing one retirement and creating major concern for several teams.

With track temperatures soaring under the Austrian sunshine, the race quickly turned into a test of both driver endurance and mechanical reliability. Almost immediately after the lights went out, Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas reported a serious problem over the team radio, informing his engineers that his brakes had caught fire.

The issue proved too severe to manage. Bottas was instructed to return to the pit lane, where the Cadillac crew worked quickly to extinguish the flames. After assessing the damage, the team decided the car could not continue, resulting in an early retirement and a disappointing end to Bottas’ afternoon after only a handful of laps.

Despite the frightening situation, Lawson managed to keep the car under control while the team assessed the problem and provided instructions over the radio. His ability to continue driving safely highlighted both his composure under pressure and the effectiveness of the safety systems built into modern Formula 1 machinery.

The string of fire-related incidents raised fresh questions about the impact of extreme temperatures on brake cooling, power unit components, and other critical systems. While Formula 1 cars are engineered to withstand enormous thermal loads, the combination of high ambient temperatures, heavy braking zones, and demanding race conditions can place every component under immense stress.

Race officials closely monitored the situation throughout the opening laps, but the incidents were handled without the need for a safety car specifically due to the fires.

The dramatic start ensured the Austrian Grand Prix immediately became one of the most eventful races of the 2026 season, with reliability issues proving just as decisive as outright pace on one of Formula 1’s fastest and most demanding circuits.
